Position : Telecommunications Excavator OperatorJob Description
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Telecommunications Excavator Operator to join our team.
The successful candidate will operate excavators and related equipment for telecommunications infrastructure installation. This includes excavation around live utilities, conduit installation, ground-level box installation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and site restoration.
This role requires strong equipment operating experience, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in utility construction environments.
A valid AR licence is required for this position.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators and other heavy equipment for telecommunications construction.
- Excavate around live utilities while following safe digging practices.
- Read and interpret utility locates to identify conflicts and prevent utility strikes.
- Install ground-level boxes, conduit, micro conduit, and related telecommunications infrastructure.
- Perform trenching, backfilling, grading, and site restoration.
- Work with supervisors, project managers, locators, and crew members to complete excavation work safely and accurately.
- Complete routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment.
- Load, move, and transport materials safely using appropriate equipment and methods.
- Participate in safety meetings and follow all workplace health and safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate site and equipment-related documentation when required.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors, crew members, and other project stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience as an Excavator Operator, preferably in telecommunications or utility construction.
- Heavy equipment operating experience required.
- Valid AR licence required.
- Valid excavator operator certification/licence is considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret utility locates.
- Experience digging around live utilities.
- Strong understanding of safe excavation practices.
- Knowledge of telecom infrastructure installation, including ground-level boxes, conduit placement, and fibre network preparation.
- Ability to perform backfilling, grading, and concrete/asphalt restoration.
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Ability to read project plans, specifications, and drawings.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with a crew.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
