MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE COUNSELLOR – Full Time
About Us
Peak House is a voluntary, ten-week, live-in, drug and alcohol treatment program for youth seeking freedom from problematic substance use. Our program is located in Vancouver, operated by Pacific Youth and Family Services Society, and funded by Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. We are licensed and have been in operation for over 30 years.
The Position
This postion provides therapeutic individual and group support to youth with a focus on the ways substance use has gotton in the way of the life they most want to live. Though recreation, group, individual, and living in a supportive, structured program youth and invited into examining their use, and learning skills and a greater sense of self understanding to support their integration back into their community of care.
Plans, and offers counseling (individual and family) therapy, and provides referrals to address specific needs. This role also involves liaising with families, schools, and other agencies to create a supportive and enriching network for youth who attend Peak House.
Role Responsibilities
· Support intake and discharges planning pre, post and during treatment.
· Create collaborative treatment plans.
· Lead and co-lead psychoeducational groups on substances, lifeskills and wellness.
· Family Work.
· Develop and maintain positive relationship with community and other service providers.
· Provide support and collaborative leadership around case planning.
· Maintain ongong knowledge of community resource relevant to client population
· Follow organizational policies and procedures, including following internal lines of supervision and communication.
· Respect and value the uniqueness of others' job descriptions.
· Provides feedback on social policy legislation; participates in program planning and community development work; and prevention programs.
· Pursue clinical consultation to ensure on-going best practice
· Collaborate with multi-disciplinary care teams, practice leaders, patient/client, family and other stakeholders in the provision of wrap around care supports.
· Responsible, with Program Manager, for supervision of BA/MA level practicum students.
· Support monthly training sessions with team members where requested and appropriate.
· Utilizes, maintain, and participates in the evaluation of work-related systems, tools, supplies, and equipment in the provision of care/treatment.
The Perfect Candidate:
- You have a Graduate Degree in relevant discipline, RCC designation or equivalent.
- You have experience working with youth in a live-in setting.
- You are passionate about enriching the lives of young people.
- You possess a strong foundation of understanding around problematic substance use, mental health, development, and theoretical models of change.
- You have flexibility, hold positive regard for your clients, are kind, and value collaboration.
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- You are invested in accountability, inclusiveness and decolonizing practices.
- You have a non-restricted valid driver's license.
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite programs.
- You value youth wisdom and have an understanding of the harm, challenges and discrimination youth often experience prior to entering a program such as Peak House.
- You are trauma informed.
- You actively resist gossip and contribute to a positive and upbeat workplace environment.

Qualifications/Requirements
- Recognized graduate degree in family therapy, counselling psychology, or relevant social sciences, preferably RCC or equivalent regulated certification
- Experience and post-graduate training / workshops in working collaboratively with young persons and families within live-in or family clinic, contexts association, with approved code of ethics.
- Computer and technology skills including basic Microsoft programs (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Power Point), internet, social media platforms and statistical database experience.
- Must comply with the requirements of a criminal record check prior to commencing employment and every five years thereafter.
- Emergency first-aid and CPRA certification.
- Negative TB test prior to commencing employment.
- Valid unrestricted Driver's License preferred.
