Job Title: Greenhouse & Market Garden Assistant Grower
Job Type: Full-time
Location: Dundas, ON
Working Hours: Morning, Day, Evening, Weekend, Flexible Hours
The Greenhouse & Market Garden Assistant Grower supports the Manager in all aspects of crop production, from seedling to market. This hands-on role includes greenhouse propagation, field work, harvest, wash/pack, basic record-keeping, and occasional market attendance. You will help turn the crop plan into reliable, high‑quality harvests for our farm store and two weekly markets while caring for the long‑term health of our soils and farm ecosystem. This position is ideal for someone with a few seasons of vegetable farming or greenhouse experience who wants to deepen their skills and grow into greater responsibility.
-
Assist with all greenhouse propagation for field and tunnel crops, including seeding, potting‑up, and transplanting.
-
Help monitor greenhouse conditions and infrastructure (temperature and humidity, vents, fans, heaters, irrigation systems).
-
Carry out day‑to‑day irrigation, basic fertilization, trellising, pruning, and use of beneficial insects and organic pest controls under the Manager’s guidance.
-
Keep greenhouse benches, tools, and work areas clean, organized, and safely stored.
-
Support bed preparation, compost and amendment applications, mulching, and weed management using organic tools and techniques (silage tarps, hand tools, mechanical cultivation, flame weeding where applicable).
-
Assist with implementing crop rotations, companion plantings, and successions according to the farm’s regenerative systems.
-
Scout for pests, insects, and diseases and report observations promptly; help apply organic and biological control methods as directed.
-
Harvest vegetables and herbs to meet farm store and market needs, following quality standards for size, maturity, and appearance.
-
Work in the wash/pack area: washing, sorting, bunching, packing, and labelling produce; setting up and wiping down the space each day.
-
Maintain a clean, food‑safe workspace and follow post‑harvest handling protocols for cooling, storage temperatures, and shelf‑life.
-
Record seeding, transplanting, and harvest details in the farm’s crop‑planning and record‑keeping system (Heirloom).
-
Help keep simple, accurate notes on yields, quality issues, and pest pressures to inform future planning.
-
Assist with inventory and restocking of greenhouse and field supplies when requested.
-
Work collaboratively with other field and greenhouse staff, following daily priorities set by the Manager.
-
Provide occasional guidance to newer crew members or volunteers on basic tasks and safe tool use.
-
Occasionally attend farmers’ markets: helping load and unload, set up and break down the stall, display produce, and interact with customers in a friendly, knowledgeable way.
-
Pitch in with reasonable additional tasks as needed, such as basic farm maintenance, tidying common areas, and seasonal jobs around greenhouse and field infrastructure.
-
Occasionally assist with general farm animal care, such as refilling feed and water for the cows, pigs, and/or chickens.
-
Additional duties as assigned
-
At least 1–2 full seasons of experience in market gardening or greenhouse vegetable production (seeding, transplanting, cultivation, and harvest).
-
Comfort with common farm tools and repetitive physical work (lifting up to 20–25 kg, bending, kneeling, working in heat and variable weather).
-
Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow directions and farm systems consistently.
-
Good communication skills and a cooperative, solutions‑oriented attitude.
-
Ability to work efficiently both in a small team and independently once trained.
-
Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation to the farm, or a clear plan to get here on time.
-
Experience with organic, regenerative, or permaculture‑inspired farming systems.
-
Familiarity with any crop‑planning or record‑keeping tools; comfort using basic computer and mobile apps (Heirloom experience is a plus but not required).
-
Experience working at farmers’ markets or in other customer‑facing food roles.
-
Experience with small farm equipment (walk‑behind tractor, flame weeder, mowers, irrigation systems).
The work environment is physically demanding and requires comfort with repetitive actions such as lifting and carrying harvest bins, kneeling, and squatting. Duties include moving irrigation lines and tarps, shoveling soil and mulch, and pushing wheelbarrows.
The role involves working in a variety of conditions, including hot, humid greenhouses, and outdoors where weather can be hot, cold, wet, windy, or buggy. The farm environment includes the presence of animals, some of which may be free-ranging.
Ultimately, the successful candidate must have a passion for working with plants, soil, and other general farm responsibilities.
This job description is intended to convey information essential to understanding the scope of the position and is not an exhaustive list of skills, efforts, duties, or responsibilities associated with it. The company reserves the right to modify or revise the job description as needed.
