Altex Industries Inc. is looking for a Technical Services Engineer – Field Division to support our industrial field projects across Canada. This role is ideal for an experienced engineering professional who enjoys a hands-on environment and working closely with field operations, clients, and project teams.
The successful candidate will provide technical support, engineering guidance, troubleshooting, and practical field solutions for industrial maintenance, shutdowns, turnarounds, repairs, and mechanical projects involving heat exchangers, air coolers, pressure vessels, pressure piping, and related equipment.
Working closely with Project Managers, Field Superintendents, Engineering, Quality, and our customers, you will help resolve technical challenges, support project planning and execution, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high technical and quality standard.
This position is primarily based in Edmonton, with occasional travel to customer locations and industrial job sites throughout Canada as required.
Position Summary
As the Technical Services Engineer – Field Division, you will provide engineering and technical support throughout the planning and execution of Altex field projects.
You will work with project and field teams to develop practical engineering solutions, prepare and review technical documentation, support repair and maintenance activities, and troubleshoot technical issues that arise during project execution.
The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical engineering knowledge with practical industrial experience and the ability to work collaboratively with engineering professionals, field personnel, trades, customers, and project teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide mechanical engineering and technical support for industrial maintenance, shutdown, turnaround, repair, construction, and fabrication projects.
- Develop practical engineering solutions for heat exchangers, air coolers, pressure vessels, pressure piping, and related industrial equipment.
- Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Field Superintendents, and field teams.
- Support project teams during planning, mobilization, execution, and completion of field projects.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, repair procedures, drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and project documentation.
- Develop and review engineered repair and alteration methods.
- Design and review specialty equipment, temporary works, lifting and rigging solutions, and other project-specific engineering requirements.
- Review customer specifications, drawings, scopes of work, and technical requirements.
- Provide technical support for bolting and flange management, gasket selection, torque and hydraulic tensioning, welding, hydrotesting, and pressure testing activities.
- Support shop fabrication and coordinate technical requirements between Field Operations, Engineering, Production, and Quality.
- Assist field teams in resolving unexpected technical issues encountered during project execution.
- Ensure engineering solutions comply with applicable codes, standards, customer specifications, quality requirements, and regulatory requirements.
- Support QA/QC documentation, turnover packages, repair documentation, and ABSA submissions and requirements.
- Participate in project planning meetings, technical reviews, kickoff meetings, and project closeout activities as required.
- Communicate directly with customers and internal teams to address technical questions and develop practical solutions.
- Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve field methods, tooling, procedures, and technical processes.
- Provide technical input into project estimating, planning, and execution strategies where required.
- Visit customer locations and industrial job sites as required to provide technical and engineering support.
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA or eligible for registration with APEGA.
- Minimum 5 years of engineering experience in industrial fabrication, pressure equipment, piping, field services, maintenance, shutdowns, turnarounds, or heavy industrial construction.
- Demonstrated engineering experience supporting industrial shutdowns, turnarounds, maintenance, repair, or field construction projects.
- Experience with heat exchangers, air coolers, pressure vessels, pressure piping, fabrication, and/or industrial maintenance.
- Strong practical understanding of industrial field construction, maintenance, inspection, repair, and fabrication activities.
- Working knowledge of applicable ASME, API, CSA, ABSA, and provincial pressure equipment requirements.
- Experience developing or reviewing engineering calculations, repair procedures, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of welding, bolting, flange management, hydrotesting, pressure testing, lifting, and rigging is considered an asset.
- Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD software.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and customer requirements.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical solutions for field applications.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Field Superintendents, Engineering, Quality, tradespeople, and customers.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple technical priorities while supporting active projects.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and willingness to travel to customer and industrial job sites throughout Canada as required.
Work Environment
- Full-time position based in Edmonton.
- Primarily office-based in Edmonton with regular interaction with Altex fabrication and field operations.
- Regular involvement with Project Managers, Field Superintendents, Engineering, Quality, Production, and field personnel.
- Occasional travel to customer locations and industrial job sites throughout Canada, as required.
