About this Opportunity:
Picton Terminals is seeking a dedicated and skilled Captain – Master 500 GT to join our team. The Master 500 GT is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the tug and tow(s) under their command. This includes ensuring compliance with all statutory, classification, and company regulations, overseeing vessel operations, managing crew performance, and optimizing vessel efficiency. The Master serves as a leader onboard, promoting safety, professionalism, and adherence to company policies.

Location: Picton to Toronto, Ontario (Lake Ontario)
Shift/Hours: 4 weeks on/4 weeks off rotating schedule
Compensation Range: $900 - $1000 per day
Start Date: June 1, 2026
Duration: Approximately 6 months

This contract opportunity offers a competitive day rate in lieu of traditional benefits and RRSP contributions.
Responsibilities, but not limited to:
- Assume overall responsibility for the safe operation of the tug and tow(s) under command.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, Transport Canada regulations, and statutory requirements.
- Lead, supervise, and support crew onboard the vessel.
- Maintain safe navigation, vessel stability, and effective onboard communications.
- Oversee vessel maintenance, supplies, and operational efficiency.
- Complete required documentation, reporting, and crew evaluations.
- Promote a strong safety culture and professional work environment.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Valid Transport Canada Master 500 GT Certificate of Competency.
- GMDSS Radio Operator’s Certificate.
- Valid marine medical and STCW/MED certifications.
- Minimum 5 years of tug/barge handling experience preferred.
- Experience operating in the Great Lakes considered an asset.
- Strong leadership, communication, seamanship, and decision-making skills.
- Comfortable working in remote environments with small crews.
- Ability to work irregular schedules, including weekends, holidays, and extended voyages.
