Position Overview
We're looking for a hands-on Handyman & Yard Foreman to oversee daily yard operations at our retail tree location south of Calgary in Dewinton. This role combines equipment operation, maintenance of yard, buildings and equipment, team leadership, and customer-facing support. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced outdoor environment, brings strong mechanical aptitude, and can effectively manage a team of laborers while keeping the yard running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities - Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Operate skid steers and other heavy machinery to load customer vehicles with trees, shrubs, and bulk products
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on skid steers, trucks, and yard equipment
- Maintain vehicles and equipment in safe, working condition; coordinate major repairs as needed
Yard Management
- Oversee loading and unloading of delivery trucks
- Organize, stage, and inventory incoming plant material
- Ensure trees and shrubs are properly watered and maintained
- Keep the yard clean, organized, and safe for staff and customers
- Maintain and organize shop and landscape supplies
Team Leadership
- Supervise and assign daily tasks to a team of laborers.
- Train team members on equipment operation, safety protocols, and yard procedures
- Foster a productive, positive work environment and hold the team accountable for performance
Retail Sales Support
- Assist customers with tree and shrub pick ups and loading
- Repair and maintenance requirements on buildings and greenhouses
- Support retail operations needs during peak season, ensuring efficient service, inventory management and professional customer experience.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating skid steers and other heavy equipment
- Proven mechanical skills—comfortable with vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
- Experience managing or supervising a team
- Ability to lift 40+ lbs regularly and perform physically demanding work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance and communication
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in landscaping, nurseries, tree farms, or agriculture
- Experience with plant material handling and care
- Carpentry, mechanical and or electrical skills
Work Schedule & Conditions
- Year-round position with seasonal variation in hours
- Peak season (April–Aug): up to 6 days per week
- Extended time off during December and January/Feb
- Outdoor work environment—must be comfortable in heat, cold, and variable weather
