Waypoints is a registered, non-profit charity that has been operating in Fort McMurray since 1982. Waypoints offers facilities, programs and services for people that have experienced, or are experiencing domestic violence and/or abuse, or sexual assault and/or abuse. Waypoints’ also provides the community with public awareness events, initiatives and educational programs to increase the prevention of violence and abuse in the Wood Buffalo Region. Waypoints operates Unity House, an Emergency Women and Children's Shelter, the Opportunities for Change Centre, The Sexual Assault and Abuse Healing Centre, and The Compass, home of our Second Stage Shelter for women and children in need of transitional housing, as well as affordable housing.

Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Sexual Trauma Rural Outreach Support Worker to join our team. Under the supervision of the Outreach Program Manager, the position promotes public education and awareness of sexual trauma, provides crisis intervention, support, and advocacy to individuals who have experienced sexual trauma and/ or their support persons, within the rural communities of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (Conklin, Janvier, Anzac, Fort McMurray No.468 First Nation, Fort McKay and the remote community of Fort Chipewyan).

Duties and Responsibilities:

COMMUNITY COORDINATION AND COLLABORATION

Foster and maintain effective collaboration with key professionals and community stakeholders who will work together to better address sexual violence in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (this includes community leaders, elders and service providers such as: healthcare workers, RCMP, Crown’s office, etc.).
Support professionals from different disciplines to coordinate and build capacity regarding roles and responsibilities in responding to sexual violence in the community.

ASSESSMENT, REFERRAL, SUPPORT AND INFORMATION

Assist individuals to identify needs and develop a plan of action by recognizing and naming challenges, providing options and referrals, emotional support and safety.
Attending to practical concerns or issues identified through the assessment process (ex. Mobility, language barriers, child-care concerns).
Keeping up to date on relevant services in the community.

IN-PERSON SUPPORT

Responding effectively to acute requests for service during regular business hours.
Providing emotional support, information and referrals to survivors of sexual violence and to the survivor’s friends, partners, family or other persons recognizing that they may need support as well.
Completing all required documentation of contact.

ADVOCACY

Awareness of issues, gaps or barriers individuals may encounter with external community resources.
Ability and willingness to advocate for appropriate service delivery while maintaining professional relationships.
Bringing advocacy concerns and actions to the attention of the Program Manager or designate.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

Actively contributing to the development of a strong staff team by offering on-going support to other staff through assessment, consultation and debriefing.
Develop and facilitate presentations to service providers and to the community on Waypoints’ services and sexual violence / trauma.
Upon request, representing Waypoints at community meetings, public activities and events.
Willingness to keep informed of various issues / needs related to client diversity.
Complete and submit statistical and reporting information to Program Manager.
Attend and participate in team meetings and Waypoints’ staff meetings.
Other duties as assigned by the Manager, Director of Program Development, and/or the Executive Director.

Additional Skills:

Ability to build rapport with clients.
Strong communication and facilitation skills.
Experience working in a rural context and an understanding of Indigenous culture.
Understanding of trauma, intergenerational trauma and trauma-informed care.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality guidelines of all records, materials and communications concerning clients.

RCMP Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
Intervention Record Check.

Pay: $35.51 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
