About the Role
Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a Communications Officer to support clear, respectful, timely, and community-centred communication across the Nation.
The Communications Officer will support internal and external communications, public notices, newsletters, social media, website updates, posters, community messaging, and department communication needs. This role will also help coordinate information flow between leadership, departments, staff, members, Elders, families, and community partners.
This is a communications-focused role with responsibility for content development, coordination, public messaging, digital communications, and communication support for programs, meetings, initiatives, and community engagement activities.
The Communications Officer may support communications related to events, meetings, and community activities; however, this role does not carry primary responsibility for onsite event setup, logistics, site operations, or event delivery.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and distribute community notices, internal updates, announcements, and public communications.
- Support communications for leadership, departments, programs, services, meetings, and community initiatives.
- Draft, edit, format, and proofread communication materials for accuracy, clarity, tone, and consistency.
- Manage or support social media updates, website updates, newsletters, email notices, posters, and other communication channels.
- Develop communication materials that are accessible, respectful, and appropriate for members, Elders, staff, families, and community partners.
- Coordinate with departments to gather information, confirm accuracy, and ensure communications are approved and released in a timely manner.
- Support communication planning for programs, engagement sessions, meetings, announcements, and community updates.
- Assist with communication calendars, templates, contact lists, photo records, media files, and communication archives.
- Prepare basic graphics, posters, public notices, and presentation materials as needed.
- Help strengthen consistency in the Nation’s messaging, tone, and communication processes.
- Support respectful use of images, names, stories, cultural information, and community content.
- Monitor communication channels and help identify items requiring follow-up or response.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive information.
- Support internal communication processes between departments and administration.
- Perform other related communications and coordination duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience in communications, administration, public relations, media, community engagement, office coordination, or a related field.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and formatting skills.
- Experience creating notices, posters, social media content, newsletters, website updates, or community announcements.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook, and basic design or publishing tools.
- Ability to gather information from multiple people or departments and turn it into clear communication materials.
- Ability to communicate respectfully with leadership, Elders, staff, members, families, and external partners.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage deadlines.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
- Experience working with First Nation communities, Indigenous governments, or community-based organizations is an asset.
- Knowledge of Tl’azt’en Nation, Dakelh culture, language, community protocols, or local context is an asset.

Work Arrangement
This position may be performed under a remote / hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational needs and approval.
Candidates must be located within Northern British Columbia or be willing to relocate to the Northern BC area. The Communications Officer must be able to attend the worksite in Tache, near Fort St. James, when required for meetings, training, community activities, or other operational needs.
The Communications Officer must be available during regular Tl’azt’en Nation business hours and maintain regular communication with leadership, departments, and staff.
