Junior Athletes is a recreational sports program that helps children develop fundamental skills, confidence, sportsmanship, and a positive relationship with physical activity. Our programs welcome children of all experience levels and emphasize learning, inclusion, and fun.

Junior Athletes Coaches lead pre-developed sports sessions at community locations in Barrhaven, Kanata, Orléans, and at the RA Centre. Coaches may work at one or more locations based on program needs and availability. Applicants are not required to work at every location but must be available for a minimum of four hours per week. Shifts are available on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.
We are looking for coaches who have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of hockey, basketball, and soccer. Applicants must be able to demonstrate and teach the basic skills, rules, and techniques of all three sports in a clear, safe, and age-appropriate way. Coaches must be at least 17 years old and comfortable working with children of different ages, abilities, and experience levels.
Mandatory staff training will take place on Thursday, September 17, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Programs begin the weekend of September 19.
Responsibilities
- Lead engaging, age-appropriate sports sessions using the Junior Athletes curriculum.
- Teach and demonstrate the fundamental skills, rules, and techniques of hockey, basketball, and soccer.
- Explain activities and skills in a clear, simple, and encouraging way that children can understand.
- Provide helpful feedback and correct basic techniques when needed.
- Teach children how to use sports equipment safely and appropriately.
- Create a positive environment where children feel comfortable learning, trying new skills, and making mistakes.
- Promote teamwork, respect, confidence, inclusion, and sportsmanship.
- Adapt activities and coaching methods for different ages, abilities, needs, and experience levels.
- Support the inclusion of children who may require additional assistance or modifications.
- Maintain active supervision and follow all safety procedures.
- Administer First Aid when required and complete incident reports promptly.
- Set up, organize, and properly store sports equipment.
- Communicate regularly with the Lead Coaches, and other team members.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled shifts, meetings, and training sessions.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 17 years old.
- A strong working knowledge of hockey, basketball, and soccer fundamentals is required.
- Must be able to confidently demonstrate and teach the basic skills, rules, and techniques of all three sports to children.
- Previous coaching, playing, or instructional experience in hockey, basketball, and soccer is strongly preferred.
- Previous experience coaching or working with children is strongly preferred.
- Experience or knowledge of ball hockey, pickleball, volleyball, or other sports is an asset.
- Experience working with children with disabilities or additional support needs is a strong asset.
- French-speaking is a strong asset.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Patient, dependable, energetic, and comfortable leading groups.
- Able to work collaboratively as part of a coaching team.
- Available to work a minimum of four hours per week. Shifts are available on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays and will typically total approximately 4 to 15 hours per week.
- Available to attend mandatory training on Thursday, September 17, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.
- Available to begin work the weekend of September 19.

Positions may be available at the following Junior Athletes locations:
- Barrhaven
- Kanata
- Orléans
- RA Centre
Applicants may indicate their preferred locations and availability. Coaches are not required to work at all three locations.
Required Certifications and Screening
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check issued within the past 24 months.
- Safe Sport Training Certificate.
- AODA Training Certificate.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in sports and physical activities, including running, jumping, kneeling, and squatting, for extended periods.
- Ability to safely set up, move, and store sports equipment.
- Comfortable working in a loud, active, and fast-paced environment.
Pay: $18.00-$19.00 per hour
