About the Role
As our Senior Civil Litigation Law Clerk, you will independently manage civil litigation files from commencement through resolution while working closely with the firm's lawyers.
You will be expected to take ownership of your files, maintain excellent client communication, prepare litigation materials with minimal supervision, and ensure that all matters progress efficiently and professionally.
This is a senior-level position requiring sound judgment, exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and extensive knowledge of Ontario civil litigation procedures.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have:
- Minimum five (5) years of recent Ontario Civil Litigation Law Clerk experience (required).
- Thorough knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Courts of Justice Act, Limitations Act, 2002, and related legislation.
- Extensive experience preparing:
- Statements of Claim
- Statements of Defence
- Replies
- Motions and Motion Records
- Affidavits
- Affidavits of Documents
- Undertakings and Refusals Charts
- Discovery Briefs
- Mediation Briefs
- Pre-Trial Conference Briefs
- Trial Records
- Trial Management Documents
- Costs Submissions
- Offers to Settle
- Minutes of Settlement
- Consent Orders
- Default Judgment materials
- Enforcement proceedings
- Experience filing documents electronically through the Ontario Courts portal.
- Experience independently managing litigation files from opening through closing.
- Excellent drafting, proofreading, organizational, and time management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal practice management software (experience with Clio is considered an asset).
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Independently managing Civil Litigation files from opening to closing.
- Preparing pleadings, court documents, legal correspondence, motion materials, and settlement documentation.
- Drafting litigation materials, affidavits, motion records, mediation briefs, pre-trial briefs, and trial documents.
- Preparing and filing court documents electronically.
- Maintaining limitation periods, court deadlines, calendars, and diarization systems.
- Communicating professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, experts, process servers, and third parties.
- Assisting lawyers with examinations for discovery, mediations, motions, pre-trials, and trials.
- Coordinating productions, undertakings, expert reports, and documentary evidence.
- Scheduling client meetings, discoveries, mediations, court attendances, and lawyer calendars.
- Maintaining organized electronic and physical files.
- Providing exceptional client service throughout each file.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
