Role Description
Reporting to the Chief Medical Information Officer and ultimately to the Chief of Staff and EVP Medical & Academic Affairs, the Interim Associate Chief Medical Information Officer (ACMIO) is appointed to provide medical and administrative leadership in the delivery, planning and implementation of information systems used in the clinical environment. Working with the CMIO, they are responsible for leading professional staff adoption of clinical information technologies and systems, coordinating ICT/CI projects to address physician/provider needs and works to implement process changes that promote best practices in patient care. The ACMIO is a physician leader with both clinical and healthcare management experience who has knowledge and skill in managing change and is able to translate clinical needs to the ICT and CI teams. The successful candidate will be skilled in articulating physician/provider ICT/CI needs and works in partnership with the CMIO, the Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) and SJHH Senior Leadership to lead in the adoption of digital health technologies and clinical practice changes. As a leader at SJHH, the ACMIO mentors and is a role model for medical staff, demonstrating SJHH values-based behaviours.
Qualifications of the Interim Associate Chief Medical Information Officer
- physician from the SJHH professional staff, currently licensed to practice in Ontario with additional training in medical informatics or e-Health and/or demonstrated experience with clinical information systems implementation and their use;
- an active practitioner with established credibility in the medical community across SJHH, who can inspire their colleagues and negotiate for buy-in to informatics strategies and systems. The ACMIO understands both the challenges and benefits of informatics in clinical practice across the continuum of care;
- a systems thinker with strong formal and informal leadership skills, thrives in a complex management model and has a collaborative leadership style; previous administrative leadership experience is an asset
- has demonstrated the ability to understand the needs of a diverse group of providers and also understands the needs of the interdisciplinary team;
- has excellent interpersonal and communication skills who can manage change in the clinical areas with respect to adoption and interact effectively with people at all levels of the organization. They have proven ability to work as a team leader and team member and are an effective consensus builder;
- has the ability to initiate and model positive changes;
- has experience with and/or interest in the areas of quality improvement and utilization management;
- established track record of accomplishments in management, particularly involving successful, collaborative work with physicians;
- has demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands;
- has interest and willingness to learn project management methodologies, clinical process analysis, change management;
- has experience with eHealth, mHealth, and electronic health record (EHR) implementation
- understands federal and provincial privacy legislation and how it applies to digital health records
- has had experience with implementation of evidence-based practice models in clinical settings;
- is committed to the Mission and Vision of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and to fulfillment of the Strategic Plan.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with the CMIO to help oversee the development of organizational goals and objectives related to Medical Informatics including optimization of the health information system, use of clinical data to drive change, and enhancing the patient and health provider experience with technology including MyDovetale patient portal, secure messaging, virtual care, and adoption of machine learning tools
- Provides leadership to all professional staff involved in Medical Informatics in terms of both contributing to a Medical Informatics program as well as ensuring physician adoption of the various Medical Informatics programs
- Promotes high quality care through the optimal use of Medical Informatics
- Provides medical leadership in health document and clinical results distribution
- Act as a clinical engagement lead with physicians for CI and ICT projects
- Represent the interests of the Office of the CMIO of SJHH on appropriate internal and external committees

Two positions available at 1 day per week per position
Length of Term
The appointment of the Interim ACMIO shall be for a one-year term, after which the value, scope, and remuneration of the ACMIO role will be formally reassessed prior to posting of the permanent ACMIO role. If a decision to post a permanent ACMIO role has not been reached by the end of the 1-year term, the Chief of Staff and EVP Medical & Academic Affairs may extend the term following satisfactory annual performance evaluations in accordance with hospital bylaws.
Time Commitment
This role will be 1 day per week, with compensation in alignment with other SJHH physician leadership roles.
