Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Perform a nutritional assessment on every new resident.
Assess, monitor and help maintain the nutritional status and requirements of all residents, especially those at high nutritional risk.
Evaluate the nutritional status and needs of each resident on a yearly basis.
Educate residents and staff on therapeutic and general nutrition, as required.
Attend resident reviews, on admission, post-admission, palliative care, transfer conferencesas a member of the Multi-disciplinary Health Care Team. Chart on each resident to be discussed.
Review menus in collaboration with the Food Service Manager. As per FLTCA 2021, all menus will be approved by the dietician and maintain records by taking into consideration the resident’s preferences and current Dietary Reference Intakes.
Assess diet orders to ensure resident nutritional needs and individual diets are met in conjunction with medical staff and implement appropriately.
Observation of meals received on the floors to ensure nutritional care is followed as per care plans.
Act as liaison between the Nursing and Dietary departments regarding resident needs.
Participate in family care conferences as requested.
Ensure accuracy of diet orders.
Evaluate and update system of providing nutritional care.
Develop and update standards and policies related to clinical dietetics.
Evaluate quarterly review data from the Food Service Supervisors to ensure individual residents’ nutritional needs are met.
Maintain knowledge of current research in geriatric nutrition.
Participate in practice-based research to further knowledge in geriatric nutrition.
Perform preliminary swallowing assessments, liase with community swallowing assessment team as required.
May sit on the medication management committee.
Other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications:

B.Sc Food & Nutrition
Completion of recognized Dietetic Internship
Registered with the College of Dietitians
Previous geriatric experience an asset
Experience working in long-term care is an asset
