Employment Type: Full- Time
Schedule: 4 days on 4 days off, 10-hour shift
Reporting to: Food Services Supervisor
City: Kamloops

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.
Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Cook is responsible for planning and preparing food for shelter meals, our Drop-in Centre and other areas. The Cook will oversee the kitchen and ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received, sorted, and stored in the most efficient manner. They will be responsible for ordering food and staying within budget. They will coordinate and work together with volunteers, community participants and staff members.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the delivery of a healthy and nutritious meal program and create menus that fit the budget and available donations
Receive, verify orders, and store all purchased food and kitchen items
Receive donated goods, sort, and transfer to appropriate area
Oversee stored food rotation
Maintain Occupational Health & Safety standards
Follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored
Work alongside volunteers, both individually and in groups
Keep all food inventories up to date and track statistics (meals made and served, etc.)
Record all temperatures daily and inform supervisor of any concerns
Greet and welcome all donors in a professional and respectful manner
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen (floors, countertops, walls etc.)
Work in dish pit, clean cookware and dishes
Pick-up food as required
Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Minimum of one (1) year experience working in the Food Service industry preferred
Experience with menu planning, large quantity cooking, and working with donated goods and assets
Valid Food Safety certificate
Ability to lead a team consisting of paid staff, volunteers and guests
Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise
Ability to respect and follow necessary boundaries with coworkers, volunteers and guests

WORKING CONDITIONS

Potentially high-pressure environment so the ability to adapt to change and find creative solutions are essential
Position is often fast-paced, and requires substantial effort to analyze information and problem solve
Position requires varied mental and emotional effort: must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and work directly with clients at risk
This is a “hands on” position: moderate physical effort required, extensive periods of standing, walking, and reaching; must be able to lift twenty-five (25) pounds
Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
