At the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society (KDEFS), we are passionate about the cause we serve – building a just and equitable community where women, gender-diverse people, and families are supported and empowered to thrive.

We are recruiting a CASUAL Thrift Store – Retail Assistant to join our growing Non-Profit organization, driven by feminist values.

The Retail Assistant supports the daily operations of the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society (KDEFS) Thrift Store while contributing to a safe, respectful, and trauma-informed environment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with the public, values community impact, and can interact compassionately with individuals who may be experiencing vulnerability. The Retail Assistant plays an important role in balancing excellent customer service with dignity, fairness, and inclusion, while supporting the store’s social enterprise goals.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Community Interaction

Provide friendly, respectful, and inclusive customer service to all shoppers and donors
Interact professionally and compassionately with individuals experiencing vulnerability, maintain clear and appropriate boundaries
Support a welcoming, safe, and non-judgmental store environment
Assist donors with drop-offs and provide clear information about donation guidelines
Demonstrate patience, empathy, and problem-solving when responding to customer questions or concerns
Uphold the organization’s values of dignity, fairness, and inclusion n all interactions

Retail Operations

Assist with opening and closing procedures as scheduled
Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems and accurately handle cash, debit, and credit transactions
Receive, sort, price, and merchandise donated goods according to established guidelines
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the sales floor, donation areas, and back -of-house spaces
Restock shelves and ensure product displays remain tidy and accessible
Follow Safety procedures and report hazards or maintenance issues promptly
Support loss-prevention practices through awareness and adherence to store protocols

Inventory & Merchandising Support

Assist with visual display and stock rotation to maintain an appealing shopping environment
Monitor inventory levels and report shortages, quality concerns, or donation trends to the Manager.
Follow pricing and quality guidelines for donated items to ensure consistency and fairness.
Help prepare seasonal or thematic displays as directed
Identify items requiring special handling (e.g., fragile goods, high-value items)

Teamwork & Communications

Work collaboratively with the Manager, staff, and volunteers to support daily operations
Follow direction and contribute positively to a team-based, values-aligned work environment.
Communicate concerns related to safety, incident, or customer behaviour promptly and appropriately
Participate in team meetings, debriefs, and training sessions
Support volunteers by offering guidance, modelling respectful communication, and helping create an inclusive environment

Community Engagement & Mission Alignment

Represent KDEFS positively and professionally within the community
Values reflect feminist values, equity, dignity, and respect
Support the outreach initiatives, donation drives, and events that strengthen community connection
Ensure store practices align with KDEFS’s mission, including supporting individuals impacted by gender‑based violence and systemic inequities
Perform other duties as required

Ability to follow policies, procedures, and direction
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
Physically able to perform retail duties, including standing for extended periods and lifting donated goods
Adaptable, solution‑focused, and able to remain calm under pressure
Sensitivity to diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds
1-2 years of retail or customer service experience.
Experience working with vulnerable people in community‑based, social service, or public‑facing roles is an asset
Experience working with the public in diverse settings is an asset
Cash‑handling experience and willingness to learn POS systems
Familiarity with thrift, second‑hand, or donation‑based retail is an asset
Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities
A criminal record check and search under the Criminal Record Review Act is required.
Drivers License – Class 5 and without restriction

Would be considered an asset to have the following training:

ASIST Training
Cultural Competency Training
Trauma Informed Training
Naloxone
Motivational Interviewing or Conflict Resolution Training
