Job Summary
The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all engineering, flat-part programming, Bill of Materials (BOM) management, and ERP-related functions at Universal Fabricating.
Reporting to the Director of Customer Service, this role ensures the accurate and efficient flow of information from customer requirements through engineering, programming, ERP systems, and manufacturing operations. The position supports operational excellence, product quality, and on-time delivery by aligning engineering activities with business objectives.
The position requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership, strategic thinking, and operational discipline. It includes leading and developing a team of approximately 20 technical professionals while driving process improvements and providing hands-on support for complex engineering, programming, and data management challenges when needed.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, develop, and manage a multidisciplinary team consisting of engineers, designers, programmers, and data personnel.
- Establish performance expectations and accountability throughout the department.
- Conduct performance reviews, coaching sessions, and development planning.
- Build a culture focused on ownership, urgency, continuous improvements, and teamwork.
- Develop future leaders within the department.
- Oversee all engineering design and review activities.
- Ensure designs meet customer specifications, manufacturing requirements, quality standards, and cost objectives.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards and best practices.
- Manage engineering workload, priorities, and resource allocation.
- Support complex technical problem solving and customer-driven engineering initiatives.
- Own engineering data integrity across the department.
- Ensure BOMs, routings, item masters, and engineering records are accurate and maintained.
- Drive standardization of engineering data structures.
- Develop and enforce revision control processes.
- Establish best practices for engineering document management and file organization.
- Partner with operations, purchasing, customer service, and IT to improve ERP workflows.
- Become a subject matter expert in the engineering components of the ERP system.
- Establish Standards for CAD modelling, drawing creation, revisions, and file storage.
- Ensure consistency across all engineering documentation.
- Drive improvements in CAD-to-BOM workflows.
- Maintain a scalable engineering file structure that supports future growth.
- Evaluate and implement technologies that improve engineering efficiency and data accuracy.
- Manage all part programming functions supporting fabrication and manufacturing operations.
- Establish programming standards and best practices.
- Improve programming efficiency, nesting performance, machine utilization and manufacturing readiness.
- Ensure programming activities are aligned with engineering intent and production requirements.
- Support automation opportunities within programming workflows.
- Identify and implement process improvements throughout engineering, ERP, and programming functions.
- Eliminate waste, duplication, and inefficiencies.
- Develop meaningful KPIs and reporting tools.
- Support automation, digitization, and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
- Lead initiatives that improve scalability, consistency, and operational excellence.

- 6+ years of progressive engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.

Pay: $150,000.00-$201,659.27 per year
