As a Library Assistant, you will work with a team to provide information services, help our members learn about and navigate library and community resources, and participate in adult programming when required.
What You’ll Do
As a Library Assistant, you will:
Responsibility for program/service delivery (internal/external), coordination of staff
- Answers member questions in person, by telephone or by internet:
- General inquiries.
- Catalogue search and use of available reference tools
- Readers Advisory including assisting members to find resources using the library catalogue, electronic databases, and the internet and making recommendations to members regarding leisure reading, viewing and listening material.
- Instruct members in the use of computers and/or software for users with all skill levels.
- Maintains and updates reserved book list by running available holds lists, checking for materials and initiating an activate hold and/or runs clear holds list to pull expired holds as necessary.
- Performs clerical duties associated with circulation and materials handling when scheduled on the circulation desk.
- Promotes Cambridge Public Library and use of its services by writing articles, material reviews, and website content as requested.
- Facilitates or conducts adult programming and group tours at the location in coordination with the Outreach and Programming Team and the Location Manager.
- Responsible for addressing the conduct of members and visitors that violates Cambridge Public Library’s Code of Conduct. This includes investigating incidents for member internet usage in contravention of Cambridge Public Library Internet Access Policy.
- Responsible for the appearance and maintenance of the collections including the display and shelving of materials, maintaining order of browsing collections (shelf reading), and regular de-selection of the collections as assigned.
- Prepares bibliographies/reading/viewing lists on selected topics and in support of Cambridge Public Library programs
- Instruct members in the use of a variety of technologies, including maker equipment and library electronic resources.
- Designs, prepares and installs theme-based displays to promote awareness and circulation of various collections.
Project management (planning, producing, implementation, monitoring, reporting)
- Undertakes projects and performs other duties at the request of the Location Manager
Other duties as required including, but not limited to:
- Acts as Person in Charge when assigned.
What You Bring
To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:
Required:
- Successful completion of post-secondary diploma or degree
- Six (6) months prior relevant experience in a public library or related field
- One (1) year experience working in a customer service position
- Excellent verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to deliver exceptional customer service
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- The ability to follow detailed processes and balance multiple tasks and responsibilities
- The desire to learn and apply new knowledge to perform work and provide instruction to others

Wage: $32.73 per hour (Level 7 in our salary grid).
Hours: 35 hours in a two-week period
Schedule: working various day, evening, and weekend shifts

Thursday - 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm (3 hours)
Friday - 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm (4.5 hours)

Tuesday - OFF
Wednesday - 1:30 pm – 8:30 pm (6 hours)*
Thursday - 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm (3 hours)
Friday - 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm (4.5 hours)
Saturday - 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm (4 hours)
Sunday - 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm (4 hours)**
*Includes a 60-minute unpaid lunch break
** During the summer months when the library is closed on Sundays, these hours will be reduced to 31 hours in a two-week period.
Note: schedules are service-driven and as such are subject to change.
