TANCO is a mining and manufacturing company located at Bernic Lake, approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba. Our operation includes an underground mine, mill, chemical plant, maintenance, surface operations, and site support teams. Employees live in Lac du Bonnet, Pinawa, Powerview-Pine Falls, Sagkeeng, Beausejour, and the surrounding area.
Role Overview: The Safety Manager is responsible for leading the site's health and safety program and ensuring it is applied consistently across the operation in line with company standards, Manitoba regulations, and ISO-aligned systems. This role works directly with supervisors and crews to ensure safety expectations are understood and followed in the field. The role provides oversight of safety systems while remaining connected to operations, ensuring hazards are identified early, risks are controlled, and actions coming from incidents, inspections, and audits are implemented and sustained.
What You Will Do
Safety Leadership and Field Execution
- Maintain a consistent field presence and reinforce expectations through direct engagement with crews
- Coach supervisors on hazard identification, safe work execution, and accountability
- Support daily line-ups, safety meetings, and ongoing crew engagement
- Drive practical safety improvements that support safe production
Risk, Incident, and Action Management
- Ensure critical risks are identified, assessed, and controlled in actual work conditions
- Lead incident and near miss investigations with a focus on root cause and practical corrective actions
- Ensure all corrective actions are implemented, verified, and sustained in the field
- Monitor trends and ensure gaps are addressed in a timely manner
Compliance and Safety Systems
- Maintain the site safety management system in line with ISO requirements and company standards
- Ensure procedures and standards reflect current work practices and are followed in the field
- Lead internal audits and support external inspections
- Act as the site contact for Mine Inspector interactions, including tracking, managing, and closing orders
- Ensure the site meets regulatory and internal deadlines for reporting, corrective actions, and compliance obligations
Training, Coordination, and Performance Monitoring
- Ensure safety and task training requirements are clear, current, and applied across departments
- Work with department leaders to identify competency gaps and address them
- Maintain clear and simple safety reporting that reflects actual site performance
- Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and support departments to ensure alignment on priorities, risks, and execution
- Monitor leading and lagging indicators and communicate risks, gaps, and required actions to leadership
What You Bring
Education & Experience
- A post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
- CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent considered an asset.
- Experience working in mining considered a significant asset, heavy industrial environments accepted.
- Experience working directly with operations in a production environment.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of Manitoba safety legislation and mining requirements
- Proven ability to lead investigations and follow through on corrective actions
- Able to translate safety requirements into practical application
- Strong communication and coaching skills with supervisors and crews
- Organized and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
