Maintenance Trainers - Work Hard, Play Hard!!
Heavy Metal Equipment & Rentals is accepting resumes for an EXPERIENCED Maintenance Trainer to facilitate and certify team members in on-going regulatory courses to satisfy legislated requirements and to score competencies in the Wood Buffalo Region (Fort McMurray). This trainer will be motivated, committed and wants to grow with us.
The Maintenance Trainer is responsible for the in-house regulatory training, certification and competencies of our team members, while creating flexibility, efficiencies and cost-reductions throughout the organization. The instructor will provide and promote the optimal environments for learning while collaborating with Human Resources, the HSE Department and Management Team to identify necessary training needs.
Our ideal candidate will have experience in a variety of training methods, which includes mentorship, simulation, hands-on and virtual instruction. An excellent Safety Instructor will:

In addition to the base salary, Maintenance Trainers in the Oil Sands can look forward to:
+ 6.5% of gross earnings for hours worked
+ Commuter Supports ($1,000/month) for eligible individuals commuting to the region

The Job
The Maintenance Trainer position is an alternating rotation of 14-on, 14-off out of the Wood Buffalo Region (Fort McMurray). Occasional interprovincial travel may be required to other worksites, including the Central Region in Alberta and potentially a remote region in Labrador. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary based upon course and work site requirements. The ability to access all mine sites is mandatory.
As a Maintenance Trainer, you will be expected to:
- Provide instruction and certification for internal, safety-regulated courses (First Aid, OSSA Fall Protection, OSSA Elevated Work Platform, Overhead Crane, Confined Space Entry & Monitor, H2S Alive, Forklift – Rough Terrain, Skid Steer, Bear Awareness, Loader, Common Safety Orientation, TDG & WHMIS)
- Assist team members to develop their skills and knowledge by completing competency evaluations for training and use of equipment
- Know how to use learning management systems and mobile learning apps, choosing appropriate training methods (virtual, simulated, mentoring, on the job training, etc.), outside of traditional, classroom-style learning opportunities
- Operate technology used in workplace settings
- Collaborate with management and safety to identify company training needs
- Schedule training sessions, considering shift/rotation schedules and participant availability to meet the needs of the division
- Manage training costs ensuring efficiencies and minimal financial impact throughout the organization
- Prepare and distribute necessary training materials
- Monitor training records to ensure there is no lapse in valid certifications
- Maintain in-house training facilities and equipment
- Engage adult learners, in a way that is helpful, to communicate concepts for learner’s retention
- Assess team members’ willingness to learn and the knowledge and skills retained ensuring accuracy in a helpful, constructive and supportive manner
- Inspire and motivate audiences for continuous learning
What We Need From YOU:
- A desire to make a difference and take pride in your work
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience, as a proven trainer, for regulated safety courses (as noted above)
- Personal competencies and abilities in operation and knowledge of equipment
- Experience in the Oil Sands or mining environment
- Mechanically inclined - experience as a Heavy Equipment Technician or mechanical background is preferred
- Adequate knowledge of web delivery tools and e-learning platforms
- Ability to complete full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor and evaluate)
- Ability to engage and promote continuous learning using traditional and modern training methods and techniques
- Exposure to the mine site is preferred
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt to the environments as necessary
- Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, with strong health and safety behaviors
- Collaborative communication style
- Excellent Customer Service skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products
- Mine Site access (Syncrude, Suncor, CNRL, IOL, etc.)
As part of our Hiring Process, YOU will be asked to:
- Provide a minimum of an advanced Class 5 Driver's License and clean Driver's Abstract
- Provide a criminal record check
- Complete drug and alcohol screening with a negative result
- Complete a fitness evaluation related specifically to your position
- Train-the-Trainer Certifications for regulated courses
- Provide copies of current certifications (if you do not have any of the training required to be on site, we will provide it for you)
- Comply with federal, provincial, Heavy Metal/client specified regulations pertaining to COVID-19
