English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor – Aviation

Location: London, Ontario
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Schedule: 40 hours per week, on-site
Salary: $85,000 annually
Vacation: 3 weeks annually

About the Opportunity

The International Test Pilots School (ITPS) is seeking an experienced and innovative ESL Instructor to support the development and delivery of specialized English-language programming within our aviation training environment in London, Ontario.

This is a unique opportunity for an ESL professional who enjoys both curriculum development and adult instruction.

As ITPS expands its English-language training capability, the successful candidate will initially play an important role in researching, developing, and refining new English-language programs and learning materials. As the programs move into delivery, the position will transition into a combination of classroom instruction, curriculum development, learner assessment, and continuous program improvement.

Our learners are adult professionals, including pilots and engineers, with varying levels of English-language proficiency. The successful candidate will therefore need to adapt instruction and learning materials to different language levels while supporting learners in a highly technical, professional aviation environment.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Research & Development

Conduct research to support the development of new ESL programs and curricula.
Identify, evaluate, and adapt level-appropriate instructional resources and learning materials.
Assist in developing course content, lesson plans, learning activities, assessments, and supporting materials.
Develop language-learning content appropriate for adult professional learners in an aviation and technical environment.
Work collaboratively with subject matter experts to understand operational and technical contexts and incorporate them appropriately into language instruction.
Support the establishment of learning objectives, progression standards, and assessment methods for new programs.

ESL Instruction

Deliver engaging, learner-centred English-language instruction to adult learners in an in-person classroom environment.
Adapt teaching approaches and materials to accommodate learners at varying stages of English-language proficiency.
Support the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills relevant to academic, technical, and professional environments.
Assess learner progress and provide constructive, individualized feedback.
Identify areas where learners may require additional language support and adjust instruction accordingly.
Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive adult-learning environment.

Program Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

Monitor learner outcomes and evaluate the effectiveness of instructional approaches and course materials.
Review and refine curricula based on learner performance, instructor observations, program outcomes, and stakeholder feedback.
Research emerging ESL methodologies, resources, and instructional practices.
Recommend improvements to course content, assessments, instructional materials, and program delivery.
Maintain appropriate course, learner, and program documentation.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally possess:

An advanced TESOL, OCELT, or comparable recognized qualification in teaching English as a second/additional language.
Education or demonstrated experience in curriculum design, course development, or instructional design.
Several years of experience teaching English to adult learners.
Experience assessing and supporting learners across varying levels of English-language proficiency.
Strong research skills and demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and adapt appropriate instructional resources.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational and planning abilities.
Confidence working independently while collaborating with instructors, technical subject matter experts, and other professionals.

Candidates with a foundational TESOL qualification and a strong combination of relevant teaching, curriculum-development, and professional experience may also be considered.

Previous aviation experience is not required. An interest in learning about aviation and the ability to translate technical and professional contexts into meaningful language-learning opportunities will be important to success in the role.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of ITPS operations and the programs supported by this position, the successful candidate will be required to successfully complete applicable security screening and background verification, which may include a criminal record check, fingerprinting, and other security or regulatory screening required for access to ITPS facilities, information, customers, or programs.
