Salary Grade 14

The base salary will be $66,350 - $94,700 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

Responsibilities

The Laboratory Manager (Curriculum & Technical Development) is responsible for facilitating the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of laboratory-based curriculum and technical learning environments within the Department of Computer Science. The role ensures that laboratory courses are aligned with learning objectives and incorporates current, industry-relevant tools and practices to enhance student learning and readiness for experiential and employment opportunities. The Laboratory Manager acts as a subject matter expert in modern computing technologies and instructional delivery, developing new laboratory materials, assignments, and supporting infrastructure, while providing guidance and training to Teaching Assistants and course instructors. This role supports the successful implementation of curricular enhancements in high-enrolment courses, enabling the Department to deliver modernized, high-quality learning experiences that reflect evolving industry standards. The Laboratory Manager plays a key role in advancing departmental curriculum modernization priorities and enhancing the competitiveness of undergraduate programs.

Qualifications

Education:

Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline (Computer Engineering or Software Engineering) or an Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science or related discipline (Computer Engineering or Software Engineering) with relevant industry experience

Experience:

3 years of industry experience applying modern software development practices and tools
Experience working in or supporting post-secondary teaching environments (e.g., Teaching Assistant experience)
Combination of technical and teaching experience in a post-secondary environment preferred
Experience developing or supporting instructional materials, labs, or coursework preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of modern software development tools and practices (e.g., version control, testing frameworks, databases, UI/UX design)
Knowledge of emerging technologies relevant to computing education, including AI and code-assisting tools
Familiarity with instructional design principles and curriculum development processes
Understanding of how to align learning activities with outcomes and student needs
Ability to design and develop technical learning materials independently, using professional judgment and expertise
Ability to translate complex technical concepts into accessible learning experiences for students
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical and instructional challenges
Ability to research, evaluate, and implement new technologies in an educational context
Strong communication skills to effectively train and support course instructors and teaching assistants
Ability to work collaboratively while also managing work independently and prioritizing multiple projects
Innovative mindset with the ability to adapt to and lead change in a rapidly evolving field
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in developing and maintaining documentation and resources
Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
