*This posting will be used to hire 2 Senior Research Assistants*

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

Senior Research Assistants with the Manitoba Food History Project will conduct oral history interviews and process them for deposit with the UW Oral History Centre Archives. They will prepare literature reviews and do archival research in the history of food in Manitoba. They will assist in the research, recording, and production of the Preserves podcast.

Duties:

Prepare equipment and materials for research.
Employees will contact participants/narrators to schedule oral history interviews and book the UW Oral History Centre’s interview room as needed. They will assist in the recording of a podcast series.
Perform academic research, standard tests and experiments.
Employees will conduct research in libraries and archives.
Assist with duties related to the production of articles, publications, reports and presentations.
Employees will communicate with and assist research collaborators, editors, and others to ensure written outcomes are produced in a timely manner. They will assist in the production of a podcast series.
Prepare literature reviews.
Employees will prepare literature reviews in various areas of Manitoba food history.
Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation.
Employees will conduct oral history interviews, and prepare transcripts, indexes, and summaries for archival deposit.
Perform data/word processing, routine computations, and record keeping.
Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities.
Assist in preparing articles, publications, reports and presentations.
Prepare materials for submission to research funding agencies and foundations.
Assist in seeking publication opportunities for the research team.
Maintain communications and outreach to research partners and sponsors.
Employees will communicate regularly with principal investigator, project collaborators, and other project employees.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

History Major with minimum GPA of 3.0
TCPS2: CORE-2022 research ethics certificate (required)
Certificate from the UW Oral History Centre's "Intro to Oral History" workshop (preferred)
Familiar with digital audio recorders.
Familiar with SharePoint or willing to learn.
Familiar with Whisper Transcription or willing to learn.
Familiar with University of Winnipeg Oral History Centre archival practices or willing to learn.
Previous experience conducting oral history interviews.

Condition(s) of Employment:

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from September 1, 2026 - July 1, 2028, and the estimated total hours of work will be 1600 hours.

Note: This position is represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada - Research Capacity Unit.
