POSITION OVERVIEW
This opportunity is intended for post-secondary students completing a co-op, practicum, or experiential learning requirement as part of an academic program and is available only to students whose academic requirements and educational institution permit and support such placements.
This is a general IT student posting. Students apply once and may be considered for placement with the IT Support, Infrastructure & Security Services, or Business Solutions (GIS) teams. Final team assignment will be based on the student’s academic background, skills, interests, and program requirements.
If you are collaborative, curious, and people-focused with an interest in technology, this work placement offers hands-on experience supporting municipal IT services. You will gain practical exposure to IT operations while developing technical, problem-solving, and customer service skills in a real-world environment.

What You’ll Do
(Responsibilities will vary depending on team assignment and alignment with your skills and academic program. Applicants may indicate areas of interest during the pre-screen process.)
IT Support Team
Receives, prioritizes, and responds to user requests for technical support.
Investigates, troubleshoots, documents, and resolves routine software and hardware issues.
Escalates complex or unresolved issues to senior technical staff.
Installs and configures software and hardware on a variety of user devices.
Prepares and maintains various computerized and manual records, forms, and other materials.
Performs routine system maintenance and administrative tasks as required.
Infrastructure and Security Services Team
Assists with routine cybersecurity and IT operations, such as reviewing alerts, basic security checks, and monitoring dashboards.
Assists in documenting security standards, procedures, and technical information.
Supports monitoring of systems, networks, and infrastructure, and escalates potential issues to senior staff as needed.
Assists with maintaining asset records, logs, and tracking tools (e.g., issue or risk logs).
Supports routine updates, patching, and configuration tasks under supervision.
Participates in infrastructure and security projects to learn best practices and operational concepts.
Business Solutions (GIS) Team
Supports the review, update, and information maintenance in corporate systems using established procedures.
Supports data comparison from multiple sources to identify missing, duplicate, inconsistent, or inaccurate information and assists with data cleanup and reconciliation.
Performs quality-control checks, documents completed work and unresolved issues and informs senior staff of unclear discrepancies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

IT Support Team
Knowledge of the practices and procedures used in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of computer equipment and software applications.
Knowledge of the functions of departments served and their requirements as applied to the work performed.
Ability to receive requests for user support, and to identify and prioritize problems for resolution.
Ability to investigate, document and resolve routine software and hardware problems.
Ability to install, configure and maintain software and hardware on a variety of user devices.
Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of computerized and manual records, forms and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to apply these skills or quickly learn and develop them in a professional setting.
Infrastructure and Security Services Team
Basic understanding of cybersecurity and networking fundamentals, including concepts such as firewalls, antivirus, access control, TCP/IP, routing, and switching.
Foundational awareness of cybersecurity risks, vulnerability management, and incident response processes.
Basic understanding of network operations, monitoring tools, and troubleshooting approaches.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills, with the ability to document and share findings clearly.
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and learn from senior staff.
Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies, tools, and cybersecurity best practices.
Demonstrated ability to apply these skills or quickly learn and develop them in a professional setting.
Business Solutions (GIS) Team
Basic knowledge of GIS concepts and spatial data editing, including the use of mapping software such as ArcGIS Pro.
Basic knowledge of data management concepts and experience entering, editing, or maintaining information in database and GIS applications.
Demonstrated ability to apply these skills or quickly learn and develop them in a professional setting.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Currently enrolled in the second-to-last or final year of a program relevant to the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined in this posting.
No prior experience required.
HOURS OF WORK
Hours of work and duration of placement may be flexible to accommodate student work program, practicum, or educational institution requirements and shall comply with the applicable employment legislation (ESA), terms and conditions. Where the placement is working in a position represented by CUPE Local 622, terms and conditions shall be in accordance with the applicable Letter of Understanding.
