Job Overview

The incumbent performs eye banking duties complying with current regulatory requirements and standards as set out by Health Canada and the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA).

This role is primarily responsible for the receipt, documentation, and processing of ocular tissue for transplant, research or teaching in compliance with SOPs and regulatory requirements. This position also provides basic administrative and clinical support including but not limited to data entry, filing, routine cleaning and quality control activities, tissue disposal and handling of blood samples for testing.

Responsibilities

Processing:

Perform surgical scrub and process eyes and other donated tissue for surgical purposes using aseptic techniques.

Examine and evaluate whole eyes under the slit lamp for acceptability for transplant.

Prepare whole eyes and excise corneal-scleral rims and scleral tissue using aseptic technique in a biosafety cabinet.

Distribute ocular tissue for surgery, research and medical training.

Participate in routine cleaning and quality control functions for eye bank facilities and equipment.

Logs donated eyes and prepares and ships blood samples for testing.

Documentation and data entry of tissue processing, and associated eye bank processes.

Strict adherence to eye bank policies and procedures and adherence to Health Canada and EBAA requirements.

Safe disposal of tissue, processing equipment, used solutions/disposables and other materials as required.

Provide administrative support; filing, data entry and following up with donor information.

Provide feedback, suggestions for process improvement, support changes in process to new and improved methods of delivering services.

Work independently under supervision of Eye Bank Coordinator/Technical Coordinator with direction/guidance provided over the phone.

Potential to act as circulator during tissue processing during the week if available.

Assist with other eye bank duties as required.

Safety Responsibilities :

Responsible for working safely in compliance with accepted safe work practices, procedures and legislated health and safety standards. Employees must: use and wear the equipment, protective devices and personal protective equipment as required; report hazards, accidents, and the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device; attend all required health and safety training; and follow all established safe work procedures.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities:

Excellent fine motor control and manual dexterity.

Organized, detail oriented, meticulous, diligent, and ability follow established guidelines, policies and procedures.

Adapt to constantly changing circumstances while maintaining a professional perspective.

Strong command of the English language is essential coupled with superior written and oral communication skills as the incumbent must be able to clearly convey information in person, over the telephone and in documentation.

Professional and service-oriented attitude that demonstrates tact and diplomacy.

Demonstrated motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Ability to maintain and protect patient confidentiality at all times demonstrates use of discretion and sound judgment.

Effective problem-solving skills are essential with the ability to work effectively with all stakeholders involved in the donation and transplant process.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

Experience in eye banking, tissue donation and in the health care field is preferred.

Knowledge of biological and health sciences, as well as quality assurance principles and aseptic technique is preferred.

Knowledge of computers, MS Office Suite (Word and Excel).

Working experience in a health sciences environment, specifically in organ and tissue donation, tissue recovery and processing, or clinical laboratory medical setting is preferred.

Required Professional Designation/Certificate:

B.Sc. or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Requirements:

Weekend and holiday availability (on-call with call back) required.

Weekday availability an asset.
