Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI) is renowned for its academic round tables, Canadian military library, museum collections, and social programs. Along with its Institute programs, RCMI also houses a member services branch within its organization where members can enjoy dining, social events, meetings, conferences, fitness, and bedroom facilities.
Position Summary
The RCMI is seeking an energetic multitasker to take on the role of Maintenance Assistant. The individual will assist in the smooth operation of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and overall building maintenance.
- Ensure all areas of the Institute are maintained to the highest standard.
- Perform basic facility maintenance and housekeeping repairs, including but not limited to:
- Plastering
- Painting
- Flooring
- Window and door repairs
- Hanging items on walls (ex. art work, museum artifacts, etc.)
- Assist in completing multiple technical/maintenance projects of varying complexity.
- Perform minor carpentry work and installations.
- Assistance with event room set-ups and audio-visual support will be required.
- Respond to maintenance emergencies, including after-hours calls, when required.
- Assist with monitoring and maintaining building systems, including:
- HVAC systems
- Fire alarm and sprinkler systems
- Boilers and mechanical rooms
- Elevators (basic monitoring only)
- Water shut-offs and building utilities
- Conduct routine maintenance inspections and help identify issues before they become major problems.
- Perform light cleaning duties of common areas, as well as garbage and recycling management.
- Perform all work in a safe and cautious manner.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Experience in a condominium or hotel operations is considered an asset.
- Basic plumbing repairs (unclogging drains, fixing running toilets, replacing faucets).
- Basic electrical work (changing light fixtures, replacing bulbs, resetting breakers).
- Experience with drywall, patching, painting, and minor carpentry repairs.
- Experience with door, lock, and hardware adjustments.
- General handyperson skills.
- Understanding of the following: HVAC systems, Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Systems, Boilers and mechanical rooms, elevators (basic monitoring, does not repair), water shut-offs and building utilities.
- Safety Skills: knowledge of workplace safety procedures, WHMIS training, understanding of fire safety procedures, ability to safely use ladders, power tools, and maintenance equipment, first aid/CPR certification is preferred.
- Customer Service Skills: professional and courteous, good communicator, reliable and punctual, able to handle complaints/issues calmly.
- Basic computer and smartphone proficiency.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Strong team-oriented mindset with a willingness to take on responsibilities beyond the core scope of the role when needed.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
- A positive attitude, great attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada for the employer.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks on a daily basis, including frequent bending, kneeling, standing, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling housekeeping equipment and supplies, moving objects related to job duties, and walking throughout a multi-level facility, as well as regular use of stairs and elevators.
- Must be able to safely lift, carry, move, push and/or pull up to 50 lbs (23kg) or more on a regular basis.
