Position Overview

Back on Track by the Y supports youth in succeeding in a school environment. Youth may attend the Back on Track program in times of crisis. It is a safe space where they can stay up to date on schoolwork while also building positive relationships and developing skills and tools that will help them succeed in a classroom setting and life. The Secondary Youth Worker strives to create a safe space for youth struggling with school or emotional distress. Youth are supported through individual and group interventions, workshops, and help with school work. The Secondary Youth Worker facilitates mediation amongst youth and school personnel, collects information and maintains database, and drafts reports and assessments. This position is responsible for building relationships and encouraging positive behaviours with youth in the programs and throughout the YMCA.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

· Adherence to the YMCA Child Protection Policies and Procedures ensuring a safe environment for children, young people/vulnerable adults; identifying children, young people/vulnerable adults who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm; and taking appropriate action to see that such children, young people/vulnerable adults are kept safe at the YMCA.

· Adherence to the YMCA Occupational Health & Safety Policy and accountable to work safely at all times, to identify and report hazards, to take whatever measures necessary and reasonable in the circumstances, to protect and promote health and safety.

· Adherence to the Back on Track Handbook and familiarity with program supplies, tools and resources.

· Ensure Y Way and Shine-On Brand Standards are met and exceeded.

· Serve as a role model to members, volunteers and staff by demonstrating our YMCA values.

· Understand, promote, participate and solicit others to participate in YMCA philanthropic, recognition and awareness events and activities in the organization.

· Assist the students with academic school work and observe/report learning gaps and strengths to the Primary Youth Worker.

· Report any unexpected developments or difficulties encountered to the Primary Youth Worker.

· Develop flexible programming based on the participating students’ needs in the framework of a comprehensive, preventative approach.

· Provide a helping relationship and intervention in crisis situations and refer cases to the appropriate resources as necessary.

· Report any unexpected developments or difficulties encountered to coordinator.

· Ensure that various reports, statistics and other information required are completed on schedule.

· Participate in the impact evaluation, performance monitoring, and process evaluation that will be undertaken by a third party for the Alternative Suspension program.

· Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

· College Diploma in Social Services, Youth work, Career planning and/or related fields.

· Experience working with youth in a preventative approach.

· Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with youth participants, staff and volunteers.

· Excellent written communication skills.

· Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity.

· Ability to work flexible hours.

· CPR and First Aid Certified

· Clear vulnerable and criminal record check.

REQUIREMENT

This position shall not, for the duration of their employment, maintain any interests directly or indirectly, as an employee, or act in any other capacity, for any other organization that conducts business which may be perceived as similar to, or in competition with, The YMCA of Greater Moncton’s business, without obtaining prior permission from the YMCA Department VP or Director.
