The Retail Lending Underwriter evaluates and adjudicates retail credit applications by analyzing financial information and verifying borrower details to support sound lending decisions. The role ensures compliance with lending policies and regulatory requirements while balancing risk management with a strong focus on member service. Working closely with branch staff, the incumbent provides guidance on underwriting decisions and promotes consistency in lending practices. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and sound judgment are essential to support effective and efficient retail lending operations.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
1. Sales, Service and Growth
- Reviews, analyzes, and adjudicates retail lending applications, including consumer loans, lines of credit, and residential mortgages, within established approval limits
- Assesses borrower creditworthiness by evaluating financial information, employment, income, liabilities, credit history, and overall risk factors to support sound decision-making
- Approves, declines, or conditionally approves applications within assigned authority levels, providing clear rationale and appropriate documentation for each decision; escalates exceptions as required
- Ensures all application data is accurate and complete by cross-checking documentation, identifying discrepancies, and confirming alignment with lending policies prior to decision making
- Identifies potential risks, inconsistencies, or policy exceptions within applications and takes appropriate action, including escalation where required
- Maintains accurate and thorough records of lending decisions and supporting documentation in accordance with policies and regulatory requirements
2. Lending Support & Decision Making
- Acts as a key resource to branch staff by providing guidance on lending policies, procedures, and underwriting decisions
- Communicates application outcomes clearly, including required conditions, documentation, or rationale for decline
- Supports consistent lending practices across the organization by reinforcing underwriting standards
- Provides insights and recommendations to enhance member experience and identify lending opportunities
3. Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensures all lending decisions comply with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards
- Maintains accurate and complete records of all lending decisions and supporting documentation
- Stays current with regulatory guidelines, market conditions, and lending best practices
- Adheres to security procedures and risk management protocols associated with the role
- Collaborates with team members, participates in team meetings and training contributes to overall team effectiveness
The preferred candidate will have successfully completed a post-secondary certificate or diploma program (1-2 years) in Business Administration plus have 3-5 years financial industry experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience in the finance industry and lending and we welcome all interested applicants to apply.
The following technical skills would be considered an asset:
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- In-depth knowledge of lending products, services, practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Skilled in sales, marketing and promotion principles.
- Ability to read and interpret financial information and documentation.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office 365.
- Relationship-building and collaboration skills.
- Strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Familiar with compliance, privacy, and financial regulatory requirements.
This position has an annual salary in the range of $57,800 - $68,000.
