Course code and title: EDEC 628-001. Literacy - Multilingual/Multicultural Settings.
Description: This course examines the teaching of literacy in a range of multilingual and multicultural settings in schools and society, primarily from the sociocultural perspectives of self and group identity, as well as empowerment within majority-minority group relations.
This course is not team-taught or offered online.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs):
Education:
1. PhD in a relevant field (e.g., applied linguistics, language and literacy education, sociolinguistics, curriculum studies, or related interdisciplinary fields).
2. Strong grounding in literacy theory, language education, and critical approaches to multilingual and multicultural education.
Experience:
1. Expert knowledge of:
Major theories and research in literacy and language education, including New Literacy Studies, multiliteracies, and critical literacy.
Cultural, discursive, and power-related dimensions of literacy teaching and learning in multilingual and multicultural contexts.
The impact of colonial, neoliberal, and language policy frameworks on literacy education and marginalized communities.
Key concepts such as linguistic imperialism, raciolinguistics, translanguaging, and plurilingualism.
Multisemiotic and multimodal approaches to literacy, including digital and arts-based practices
Relationships among identity, diversity, access, and power in language and literacy education.
Pedagogical approaches including culturally responsive, anti-colonial, and land-based literacies.
2. Experience teaching or facilitating learning in multilingual and/or multicultural educational contexts.
3. Demonstrated ability to engage students in critical analysis of theory and support connections to research and/or practice.
4. Experience designing graduate-level learning activities that integrate theory, reflection, and applied inquiry.
Other:
1. Knowledge of the impact and experience integrating pedagogical approaches grounded in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
2. Familiarity with using myCourses, Zoom, and/or other similar online platforms to facilitate high-quality teaching and learning experiences.
