Position Overview
McDonough | BID Canada Ltd is seeking a skilled and motivated Welder / Fitter to join our manufacturing team. This role is responsible for the fabrication, fitting, assembly, installation, and support of conveyor systems, industrial machinery, structural frames, and custom designs. Working from technical drawings and specifications, the Welder / Fitter will use welding, layout, fitting, and mechanical assembly skills to help deliver high-quality products safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
· Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, schematics, and technical specifications to fabricate, fit, and assemble conveyor systems, machinery components, and structural frames.
· Perform MIG, TIG, and Stick welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, and other materials as required.
· Carry out layout, fitting, tack welding, alignment, and assembly of components according to dimensions, tolerances, and quality standards.
· Cut, shape, grind, drill, and prepare metal parts using hand tools, power tools, plasma cutters, oxy-fuel torches, grinders, drills, and measuring instruments.
· Inspect welds, fits, and assemblies for accuracy, quality, and adherence to specifications, making corrections as needed.
· Conduct mechanical adjustments, alignments, and checks to ensure proper function and smooth operation of machinery.
· Identify and troubleshoot issues during fabrication, fitting, welding, or assembly, proposing practical solutions to maintain workflow.
· Work collaboratively with fabricators, welders, fitters, machinists, and assembly teams to ensure projects are completed to specification and on schedule.
· Operate and maintain welding, shop, and fabrication equipment safely and efficiently, helping prevent breakdowns.
· Assist with the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and shop equipment as required.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following all health and safety protocols, shop standards, and procedures.
· Participate in continuous improvement efforts by offering suggestions to enhance productivity, safety, and quality.
Qualifications
· Proven experience as a Welder, Fitter, or similar role in manufacturing or industrial setting, preferably in conveyor systems, industrial machinery, custom fabrication, or machinery assembly.
· Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding, with knowledge of proper techniques, settings, and material handling.
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, schematics, and technical specifications.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of fitting principles, tolerances, material properties, and quality requirements.
· Familiarity with metalworking and fabrication tools and processes, including grinding, cutting, drilling, measuring, layout, and assembly.
· Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, problem-solving skills, and the ability to produce high-quality work with minimal supervision.
· Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced shop environment.
· Commitment to workplace safety, quality, organization, and teamwork.
· Physical ability to handle heavy materials and machinery, work in various positions, and perform tasks in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
· Welding certifications such as CWB, AWS, or equivalent are an asset.
· Certification or training in mechanical fitting, machining, welding, or a related field is an asset.
· Experience in conveyor system fabrication, conveyor manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, or industrial equipment assembly is considered a plus.
· Forklift operation certification is an asset.
Work Environment
· Manufacturing shop floor environment with exposure to welding fumes, noise, machinery, tools, and fabrication processes.
· Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
· May involve standing, bending, lifting, moving heavy components, working in various positions, and working in confined spaces or at heights.
· Occasional overtime may be required to meet production deadlines.
