Job Listings

The Medical Laboratory Assistant / Technician is responsible for a combination of duties including specimen procurement and processing and clerical tasks. They may perform technical procedures under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist in compliance with current legislation and Hospital procedures.

Affiliation: Union – OPSEU

Rate of Pay: $32.59 - $37.26 / hour

Hours of Work: Combination of eight hours shifts between 7:00 am – 11:00 pm

Days, Evenings and Weekends

Mandatory Requirements:

Graduate from recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant / Technician course (MLA/T)
Current registration with College of Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO)
Proficient in specimen collection, handling and processing
General working knowledge with computers & Point of Care system
Knowledge of basic quality control practices
Must have an excellent work record, including attendance
Must demonstrate a commitment to ensure personal safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers and visitors

Assets:

Recent experience in a Laboratory department
Oral proficiency in French at an advanced or superior level
Experience with Meditech LIS

Responsibilities:

Blood sample procurement as per established protocols
Sample preparation for analysis e.g. separation (including referral specimens)
Assess specimen suitability and integrity and process accordingly
Reagent preparation; smear preparation e.g blood films
Staining of smears
Urinalysis (excluding microscopic)
Perform and record quality control results for interpretation and approval by MLT
Perform lab tests according to Standards of Practice under the supervision of an MLT
Operation of automated instruments after proper functioning has been verified by the MLT
Set-up of serology tests e.g. occult blood, pregnancy test to be read and interpreted immediately by MLT
