Child and Adolescent Therapist - (Full-time, permanent)
Amal Youth and Family Services is seeking an experienced Child and Adolescent Therapist to provide specialized assessment, treatment, consultation, and care coordination to children, youth, and families experiencing complex emotional, behavioural, developmental, attachment, and mental health challenges.
Working within an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate will bring advanced knowledge of developmental trauma, attachment, neurodevelopment, child development, and family systems. This position provides a high degree of clinical autonomy and requires strong clinical judgment, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
The successful candidate will use evidence-based, developmentally responsive, and trauma-focused interventions tailored to the child's developmental level, attachment needs, and presenting concerns. Approaches may include play therapy, parent-child relational interventions, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), attachment-focused family interventions, expressive therapies, group interventions, and other evidence-supported treatments. Therapy will emphasize the central role of play, relationships, and caregiver involvement in promoting healing, emotional regulation, resilience, and healthy development.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial, developmental, attachment, and trauma-informed assessments.
- Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate individualized treatment plans.
- Provide specialized therapeutic intervention for children, youth, and families experiencing complex trauma, attachment disruptions, anxiety and mood concerns, emotional dysregulation, grief and loss, behavioural challenges, family conflict, neglect/maltreatment, and neurodevelopmental or developmental concerns.
- Provide individual, family, caregiver, and group therapy using evidence-based approaches.
- Incorporate play, expressive arts, and other appropriate experiential therapies based on the developmental and clinical needs of each child or youth.
- Provide support and psychoeducation to families and caregivers who are navigating childhood trauma, attachment ruptures, emotional regulation, and co-regulation.
- Collaborate with foster and kinship caregivers, schools, physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and other community partners.
- Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences, treatment planning, program development, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and reports in accordance with professional and regulatory requirements.
- Provide clinical consultation and mentorship to colleagues and students, and contribute to training, education, and community outreach.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, or a related clinical discipline.
- Eligibility for registration and good standing with the applicable professional regulatory body in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Minimum five years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, and families.
- Demonstrated experience assessing and treating children and youth with complex developmental, emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs.
- Strong knowledge of child and adolescent development, developmental trauma, attachment, family systems, and neurodevelopment.
- Strong clinical assessment, treatment planning, documentation, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
Additional Assets
Experience or formal training in one or more of the following would be considered an asset:
- Certification in Play Therapy and/or ongoing education in play therapy.
- Theraplay
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Attachment-Based Family Therapy
- Sand Tray, Art, Music, Narrative, Movement, or other expressive therapies
- Pediatric, children's mental health, child development, or interdisciplinary health settings
