Full job description

Position: Shelter Worker – Evening – 1 position

Position: Friday to Sunday 3:00 pm to 12:00 am

Rate of Pay: $23.58 per hour

Reports to: Shift Supervisor and Shelter Manager

Inn From the Cold (IFTC) meets the needs of people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in York Region. We work with the community and collaborate with our partners in supporting those with basic to complex needs. IFTC’s work is housing focused and trauma informed, offering a continuum of services and programs that allow us to partner with our clients on their journeys out of homelessness. IFTC promotes a healthy and safe workplace and has created an intentional culture of wellness for all staff, volunteers and clients.

JOB SUMMARY

· Ensuring the safety and well-being of clients

· Informal counselling, crisis prevention and intervention

· Client intakes and transfers

· Ensuring the smooth operation of the shelter program in collaboration with Shift Supervisor, other IFTC staff and volunteers

ADMINISTRATIVE/COMMUNICATION

· Data entry (HIFIS), incident reports

· Shift exchange debriefing

· Participate in a minimum of 3 paid staff meeting per contract

· Participate in one-on-one supervision meetings bi-monthly and an end of contract performance review

· Complete intakes of new clients as needed

HEALTH AND SAFETY

· Ensuring that all Health & Safety, psychological wellness and IPAC guidelines are followed as per IFTC policies

· Report to the Shift Supervisor any relevant health and safety concerns

HOUSEKEEPING

Prepare service for the evening shift including getting the evening meal started
Conduct room and bathroom checks on a regularly scheduled basis
Prepare and serve coffee, tea, and other beverages, to clients between meals when volunteers are not scheduled to be in
Provide clients with basic needs including clothing, personal care items, clothing, access to showers and laundry, etc.
Washing kitchen and shower towels at end of shift
Complete the Shift checklists

EDUCATION & PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE

· Diploma in social service worker program, community worker program, youth worker program or other relevant human services field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally.
Demonstration of advanced interpersonal skills specific to the role including de-briefing, active listening, conflict resolution and problem solving.
Demonstrated ability to participate and contribute in a team environment with an inclusive and collaborative approach.
Ability to work under minimal supervision and act with a high degree of independent judgement, taking action on a variety of matters as required.
Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
Demonstrated commitment to continual learning in providing services to the homeless
Knowledge and understanding of the issues of homelessness.
Proven ability to work in a stressful and changing work environment.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Ability to report activities and data in an efficient manner.

· Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination prior to commencing work

· Vulnerable sector screening prior to commencing work

· Food Handling certificate prior to commencing work

· Level 1 Occupational First Aid and CPR Certificate required prior to commencing work

· Non-violent Crisis Intervention training is an asset

· The candidate is expected to work in only one congregate setting for the duration of their contract.
