Full job description

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Side Hoe Operator to join our Underground Utilities team in the Edmonton area. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating a side boom/side hoe excavator to support the installation of underground water, sewer, storm, and utility infrastructure while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

Operate side hoe excavators and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Assist with the installation of underground utilities including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and related infrastructure.
Perform trenching, backfilling, grading, and pipe placement activities.
Work closely with pipe layers, labourers, foremen, and survey crews to ensure accurate installation.
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections and complete required documentation.
Identify and report equipment deficiencies, maintenance requirements, and safety concerns.
Follow project plans, grades, specifications, and utility locates.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Adhere to all company policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
Participate in toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, and safety initiatives.
Assist with other duties as assigned to support project requirements.

Qualifications

Previous experience operating a side hoe excavator in underground utility construction.
Strong understanding of underground utility installation practices and excavation procedures.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, grades, and utility locates.
Valid Class 5 Driver's License; Class 3 with air brakes is considered an asset.
Ground Disturbance Level II certification considered an asset.
CSTS, WHMIS, and other industry safety certifications are considered assets.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work extended hours as required by project schedules.
Ability to climb on and off heavy equipment safely.
Comfortable working in varying weather and site conditions.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks when required.

Work Location

Projects are located throughout the Edmonton region. Driving to various job sites is required.
