Full job description

Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones, and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Position Overview:

As a member of the Applied Physics team, you will contribute to the development of our magnetized target fusion (MTF) power plant. The Applied Physicist will aid in the analysis of our experimental campaigns, develop models that reconcile experimental results with simulation, and help to inform the direction of future development.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has strong communication skills and can stay focused on goals while operating in a fast-paced development environment. They would possess the drive required to work on difficult problems, are excited by alternative and innovative solutions, and are comfortable with working both independently and within a team. The candidate should have experience in modeling complex systems, as well as interpretation of real experimental data in the context of computational models.

The position is primarily on site at General Fusion's Richmond, BC facility. This posting is for multiple openings (2 positions) within the team.

Responsibilities:

Analyze and integrate diagnostic data from General Fusion’s plasma experiments to develop comprehensive hypotheses for evolution of plasma characteristics and reconcile them with simulation results and reconstructions.
Propose new experimental campaigns and corresponding simulations to answer key questions regarding trends in plasma performance and optimization of MTF targets.
Curate and interpret experimental data, create and maintain data analysis software.
Work with the simulation, reconstruction, and diagnostic teams to develop models of spherical tokamak (ST) plasmas during compression.
Communicate your results to both technical and non-technical audiences via in-person presentations and peer-reviewed papers.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering physics or physics.
1-2 years relevant experience preferred.
Strong foundation in principles of thermodynamics and electromagnetics.
Strong analytical math skills, especially in vector calculus, linear algebra, and statistics.
Experience in programming using Python and/or C# / C++.
Able to create efficient algorithms.
Experience with image analysis or tomography is preferred.
Experience working in a multidisciplinary research environment preferred.
Proven ability to work effectively in a team setting.
Excellent communication skills.

The typical hiring range for this position is $80,000 – 120,000 annually. General Fusion considers several factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills, and experience, proficiency, job location, and internal equity.

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the experiment and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.
