Department Information

The laboratory at Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) is expanding!! We are looking to fill multiple positions for the Medical Laboratory Technologist 1, Core Laboratory, to rotate through our new 24-hr schedule.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist I (Core Laboratory) is responsible for the analysis of a wide range of biological samples to support accurate diagnosis, treatment, and disease management. Based at Stanton Territorial Hospital, this position works in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary laboratory environment, performing testing in areas such as chemistry, hematology, and transfusion medicine.

The role supports healthcare delivery across the Northwest Territories by providing high-quality, timely laboratory results to physicians, healthcare teams, and public health programs. Working both independently and collaboratively, the incumbent contributes to patient care, assists in addressing regional health issues, and may provide guidance to laboratory assistants.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct and analyze biological sample testing using laboratory instrumentation and manual techniques.
Verify patient/sample information and accurately enter and release results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Perform and monitor quality control procedures, including calibration and troubleshooting of equipment.
Collect blood and other specimens from adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients using standard techniques.
Maintain laboratory inventory, order supplies, and ensure compliance with safety and transportation regulations (TDG).
Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on complex laboratory equipment.
Support healthcare teams by assisting with interpretation of laboratory results and ensuring accurate reporting.
Provide excellent client service, training, and orientation while adhering to GNWT policies and professional standards.

Key Qualifications:

Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technology Program at a minimum of a diploma or degree level from an accredited Canadian Post-Secondary Institution.
Internationally trained Medical Laboratory Technologists must have at least three (3) years of working experience in a Canadian Hospital Laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (in a core laboratory).
Relevant experience, within the past five (5) years in all the core laboratory disciplines including: Chemistry; Hematology; Transfusion Medicine; Urinalysis; specimen collection from adults, children and neonates.

Additional Requirements:

Must be registered with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science at the General Registered Technologist designation.
New graduates waiting to write their certification examination will be considered; however, registration must be achieved prior to beginning employment with Laboratory Services.
