Position: Full Time Term, one position available

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada (this position requires in-person services, not virtual)

City: Middleton

Initial Posting Date: April 28, 2026. This position is currently designated as a hard-to-fill position as of August 10th, 2026.

Application Deadline: August 20th, 2026 at noon

Anticipated Start and End Date: End of August 2026 until June 2027

Compensation is in accordance with the APSEA/NSGEU Collective Agreement

Recruitment & Retention Incentive: $2,000 signing incentive upon commencement of employment

Recruitment & Retention Incentive:

This position is currently designated as a hard-to-fill position and is eligible for a recruitment and retention incentive in accordance with a Letter of Understanding between APSEA and NSGEU.

Successful candidates may be eligible for a recruitment and retention incentive that includes:

A $2,000 signing incentive upon commencement of employment;
Additional retention payments during the assignment period; and
A completion incentive for employees who successfully fulfill the full assignment period.

All incentive payments are subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable Letter of Understanding, including eligibility requirements, continued service in the designated position, and statutory deductions.

Why Join Us?

The Educational Interpreter (EI) provides interpreting support to learners who are Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) in the classroom. They also provide interpreting services for the classroom teacher, Education Support Teachers (EST’s), and school support staff.

Day-to-day, the EI:

Provides a culturally and linguistically equivalent message in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English for all classroom participants.
Supports the learner while they navigate a hearing learning environment.
Acts as a cultural mediator while acknowledging the differences between the unique cultures of home and classroom.
Works alongside the classroom teacher, Supervisor of Educational Interpreting Services, Education Support Teacher -DHH, Education Support Specialist (ESS) - ASL, and ESS - Mentor.

What you bring table:

Graduate of an Interpreter Training Program at a college or post-secondary level is required.
A post-secondary degree in any field is preferred - university or college studies in Deaf education, child development, or special education would be an asset.
Minimum of three (3) years of interpreting in the community, post-secondary, or video relay services environment(s).
Experience working with children and youth.
Professional certification from: CASLI, The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Canadian Government’s Translation Bureau and/or other interpreter screenings are desirable.
Ability to obtain a minimum of 3.5 on the first and fourth categories of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
Knowledge of child and language development.
Experience with cross-cultural communication.
Knowledgeable of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of an educational team.
Fluency in English (written, spoken & sign), and ASL (American Sign Language).
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills in working with students and colleagues; experience in working or interacting with Deaf and/or hard of hearing persons.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Is collaborative when working within a team.
Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.

Would be a plus if you have:

Early Childhood Education training
Experience as an interpreter in an educational setting
