Full job description

Job summary

Indian Groceries is seeking two dependable and experienced line cooks to join our kitchen team in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The successful candidates will prepare and cook menu items, maintain food-quality standards and support the efficient operation of the restaurant kitchen.

Responsibilities

Prepare and cook complete meals and individual dishes according to restaurant recipes and standards.
Set up and maintain assigned cooking stations before and during service.
Cook menu items using grills, fryers, ovens, stovetops and other commercial kitchen equipment.
Prepare ingredients by washing, cutting, chopping, portioning and measuring food items.
Ensure meals are prepared accurately, consistently and within required service times.
Accommodate customer food allergies and dietary requirements when instructed.
Monitor food quality, portion size, presentation and temperature.
Maintain inventory records and advise the kitchen supervisor when supplies are required.
Inspect ingredients and kitchen supplies for freshness and quality.
Store food properly and follow safe food-handling procedures.
Maintain a clean and sanitary workstation, kitchen and food-preparation area.
Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, counters and work surfaces.
Follow restaurant recipes, food-safety procedures and occupational health and safety requirements.
Assist with receiving, unpacking and storing food and kitchen supplies.
Work cooperatively with cooks, kitchen helpers, servers and management.
Train or assist in training kitchen staff when required.
Perform other related kitchen duties as assigned.

Employment requirements

Completion of secondary school is preferred.
Cuisine specialities – South Indian, East Indian, West Indian and Vegetarian.
A cooking certificate, culinary training or equivalent practical kitchen training is an asset.
Experience – 7 months to less than 1 year
Experience working in a fast-paced restaurant kitchen is preferred.
Knowledge of food-safety, sanitation and safe food-handling practices.
Ability to prepare multiple orders accurately and efficiently.
Ability to work independently and as part of a kitchen team.
Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a hot kitchen environment.
Ability to lift kitchen supplies and food products weighing up to approximately 23 kg or 50 lb.
Must be available to work flexible shifts, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
