Personal Support Worker - Churchill, Oakville - CAD$108.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a woman in the early stages of suspected dementia who lives with her two adult sons in Oakville. She's widowed and experiencing slight cognitive decline that has affected her motivation and increased feelings of depression. While she can navigate basic tasks like microwaving prepared meals or making coffee, she requires supervision for safety—particularly around cooking, as she's very forgetful and poses a burn risk. The household includes a friendly dog who barks for treats but doesn't bite. She prefers female companionship and has been reluctant to engage in activities alone, showing decreased interest in hobbies lately. She's hard of hearing, so clear communication is essential.

Responsibilities:

Your primary role will be providing companionship and supervision during weekday hours when family members are at work. You'll prepare meals for her, handle light tidying around the home, and ensure her safety throughout the visit. The focus is on engaging her in conversation, encouraging activities, and helping combat the isolation she feels during the day. You may occasionally provide transportation for errands or appointments. Medication management isn't required—she takes only Vitamin D daily. The goal is to build a consistent, trusting relationship through regular visits, as routine is especially important given her cognitive challenges.

What We're Looking For:

We need someone with dementia or memory care experience who is calm, patient, and brings positive energy. Strong English communication skills are essential due to her hearing difficulties. Cantonese language skills are a significant plus. You should be reliable, take initiative when needed, and communicate clearly with the family about each visit. We value caregivers who make clients feel comfortable, respect their independence, and can adapt engagement strategies to someone who may be resistant to activities. Comfort with dogs is necessary.

Schedule:

We're looking for Tuesday coverage from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM (4 hours weekly) on a recurring basis. The start date is flexible, ideally beginning in early August to allow time for proper introductions and relationship building. This is a three-month commitment to ensure consistency and continuity of care, which is crucial for someone with cognitive decline.
