Ski Patrol and Safety Director
Position Summary
The Ski Patrol and Safety Director is responsible for leading all aspects of mountain safety, ski patrol operations, emergency response, and risk management. This role ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for guests and staff by overseeing patrol personnel, developing safety programs, maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, and coordinating emergency preparedness and incident response.
Key Responsibilities
· Leadership & Management
· Lead, supervise, schedule, and evaluate the Ski Patrol team.
· Recruit, train, mentor, and develop full-time and seasonal patrol staff.
· Foster a positive, professional, and safety-focused team culture.
· Conduct regular staff meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews.
Mountain Safety
· Oversee daily mountain safety operations, including trail inspections, hazard mitigation, signage, closures, and opening procedures.
· Ensure trails and terrain parks meet established safety standards.
· Monitor weather, snow conditions, avalanche hazards (where applicable), and operational risks.
· Develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and best practices.
Emergency Response
· Direct emergency medical response and rescue operations on the mountain.
· Ensure patrol staff maintain required certifications and training.
· Coordinate responses with local emergency services, fire departments, EMS, and law enforcement.
· Lead incident investigations and prepare detailed reports.
Risk Management
· Identify operational risks and implement mitigation strategies.
· Maintain accurate records of incidents, injuries, inspections, and safety audits.
· Review incidents to identify trends and recommend improvements.
· Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety regulations.
Training & Compliance
· Develop and deliver ongoing training programs in first aid, rescue techniques, lift evacuation, emergency management, and guest service.
· Coordinate annual certification requirements and continuing education.
· Ensure compliance with provincial regulations and industry standards.
Operations
· Collaborate with Lift Operations, Grooming, and Guest Services to support safe daily operations.
· Participate in operational planning for special events and peak periods.
· Assist with lift evacuation planning and emergency drills.
· Manage patrol equipment, medical supplies, rescue gear, and departmental budget.
Qualifications
· Minimum 3 years of ski patrol experience, with progressively increasing leadership responsibilities.
· Previous supervisory or management experience preferred.
· Current advanced first aid certification (or equivalent), with CPR certification.
· Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA Level 2)
· Lift evacuation and rescue training.
· Strong knowledge of ski area operations, mountain hazards, and risk management.
· Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
· Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
· Proficiency with incident reporting and Microsoft Office or similar software.
· Valid driver's license; snowmobile and ATV experience is an asset.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to ski or snowboard proficiently in all terrain and weather conditions.
· Ability to transport rescue equipment and perform physically demanding rescue operations.
· Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
· Work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
· Availability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and emergency call-outs as required.
Reports to: General Manager
Supervises: Ski Patrol Supervisors, Full-Time and Seasonal Ski Patrollers, Safety Personnel, and Volunteer Patrol Members (where applicable).
Pay: $35.00-$38.00 per hour
