Overview
Handling Specialty Manufacturing Ltd. is seeking an ingenuitive and practical recent graduate to help implement AI systems across the company. This person will work directly with engineering, applications, estimating, sales, project management, service and administration to identify repetitive or knowledge-heavy work and convert it into reliable AI-assisted workflows.
This role will have a large impact on the operations and help drive productivity across the company. The successful candidate will combine software fundamentals, process thinking and strong communication. They will prototype solutions, connect approved information sources, test outputs with subject-matter experts, document how each tool works and help employees use it effectively.
Responsibilities
- AI solution implementation. Configure and deploy approved ChatGPT workspaces, custom assistants, prompt libraries, reusable workflows and lightweight applications for defined business needs.
- Company knowledge systems. Organize and index engineering standards, project files, historical estimates, manuals, specifications, lessons learned and other approved sources so employees can retrieve relevant information with traceable references.
- Data and system integration. Build and maintain controlled connections to file repositories, databases, ERP information and internal tools using APIs, SQL, JSON and Model Context Protocol (MCP) where appropriate. Begin with read-only access unless broader access is specifically approved.
- IT infrastructure and connectivity. Work with IT to deploy AI applications within approved network and server environments. Configure and troubleshoot application connectivity, authentication, service accounts, network paths, certificates, proxies, logging and backups without bypassing company security or change controls.
- Workflow automation. Create AI-assisted processes for document intake, information extraction, RFQ and specification review, compliance matrices, historical cost searches, vendor comparisons, quotation support and internal reporting.
- Testing and validation. Develop representative test cases, compare AI results with known answers, track errors and limitations, and obtain subject-matter expert approval before releasing a workflow for operational use.
- Security and responsible use. Follow company requirements for confidentiality, customer information, intellectual property, access control, retention and approved AI services. Design workflows with human review for engineering, commercial, legal and safety-sensitive decisions.
- Documentation and support. Maintain clear system diagrams, data-source inventories, setup instructions, change logs, known limitations and user guides. Troubleshoot issues and coordinate with IT or vendors when required.
- Training and adoption. Provide practical demonstrations, office hours and short training sessions. Help employees write better instructions, verify results and understand when AI should and should not be used.
- Measurement and improvement. Track adoption, time saved, answer quality, user feedback and recurring failure modes. Recommend improvements based on measurable business value.
- Technology monitoring. Evaluate relevant changes to ChatGPT, APIs, models and supporting tools, then recommend controlled trials when a new capability could materially benefit the company.
Qualifications
- Recent advanced diploma or bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, data science, information systems or another closely related software-focused discipline.
- Working knowledge of core networking and IT concepts, including TCP/IP, IP addressing and subnets, DNS, DHCP, LAN/WAN and Wi-Fi networks, VPNs, firewalls, TLS/certificates, Windows endpoints or servers, identity and access management, and systematic connectivity troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated programming proficiency in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript or a comparable language, including the ability to structure an application, work with existing code, debug failures and use version control.
- Candidate has completed at least one practical AI application using a large language model, API, retrieval system or similar technology, with evidence of testing, documentation and attention to output quality preferred.
- Working knowledge of APIs, JSON or other structured data, databases/SQL and common Microsoft 365 or Windows-based business tools.
- Ability to learn an unfamiliar business process, map its inputs and decisions, and translate it into a clear technical workflow.
- Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-software users and produce concise documentation.
- Careful judgment when working with confidential customer, employee, commercial and engineering information.
- Self-directed, organized and comfortable moving between prototyping, user meetings, testing, documentation and support.
Preferred assets
- Co-op or employment experience developing, deploying or supporting software or AI applications used by other people.
- Hands-on experience with OpenAI/ChatGPT APIs, custom GPTs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, embeddings, MCP, prompt evaluation or agent workflows.
- Hands-on exposure to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365 administration, Azure or another cloud platform, PowerShell, Linux, containers, virtualization, reverse proxies, network monitoring, endpoint protection or backup and recovery technologies.
- Experience extracting information from PDFs, Office files, drawings or scanned documents and storing metadata for search and analysis.
- Exposure to manufacturing, custom machinery, engineering, estimating, project-based businesses or ERP systems.
- Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts such as least-privilege access, secrets management, logging and data classification.
What success looks like in the first year
- Complete a structured inventory of priority use cases, approved data sources, access restrictions and expected business benefits.
- Deliver several production-ready AI workflows that are actively used by employees and have named business owners.
- Establish a repeatable method for testing accuracy, recording sources, managing changes and obtaining approval before release.
- Create clear training and support materials that enable employees to use AI safely and independently.
- Demonstrate measurable improvement in selected processes, such as reduced search time, faster document review, more consistent outputs or better reuse of historical knowledge.Join us to be part of an energetic team dedicated to innovation!
