The position includes working up to two weekends a month. Standby for on call after-hours is required for up to 3 days a week.
Due to the on-call portion, preference will be given to those who reside in Chatham-Kent.
This position requires substantial interaction with the public in an enforcement capacity, which will require conflict resolution skills.
Job Summary
The Animal Control Officer (ACO) will perform investigative and regulatory work, patrolling Chatham-Kent and enforcing Municipal by-laws and regulations related to animals. Under general supervisions, ACO will investigate complaints regarding animal related by-law violations, catch and transport stray animals, issue warnings and fines, and perform related clerical work.
Requirements
Knowledge of and support the goals of PAW Pet and Wildlife Rescue, compassion for animals and a genuine dedication to their welfare, ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to think critically, ability to use computer-based shelter software program, ability to effectively communicate with the public, coworkers, volunteers and other agencies. Possess a valid Class G license, clean criminal record and drivers abstract, and a Grade 12 education (additional education or training in law enforcement is highly desirable). Must be comfortable handling all species of animals and their waste.
Major Duties Include
o Enforce animal control by-laws, D.O.L.A. and licensing regulations.
o Investigate and resolve complaints related to animals.
o Investigate biting incidents and gather information.
o Take animal cruelty complaints, gather information then forward to cruelty inspectors.
o Receive calls from the public and determine nature of complaints or infraction; use critical thinking skills to determine the appropriate action; follow up with the public and discuss incidents with the affected parties.
o Document all pertinent information and complete appropriate forms in relation to complaints, infractions, investigations and licensing matters.
o Respond to emergency calls on 24hr basis (split duty with other officers).
o Assist in all aspects of animal centre work, including care and feeding, kennel housekeeping as needed.
o Attend court and provide testimony.
o Issue warning notices, notices of contravention, offence notices, orders, court orders and request warrants as required, follow up to ensure compliance.
o Drive an animal control vehicle and conduct routine patrols of assigned areas.
o Perform routine clerical work.
o Participate in education programs in schools and community organizations.
o Perform other duties as assigned to support animal shelter needs.
Hours of Work
8AM-5PM (including some stand-by, on-call shifts)
Pay: $25.00-$30.00 per hour
