As we continue to expand nationally, we are seeking a Senior Structural Forensic Engineer to support and strengthen our growing Forensic Engineering division.
The Opportunity
The Senior Structural Forensic Engineer will lead and manage forensic engineering investigations involving buildings, structural systems, foundations, framing, building envelope-related structural impacts, and civil/structural property loss events.
This role is intended for an experienced structural or civil/structural engineer with direct forensic assessment experience involving property damage, structural failures, construction deficiencies, storm-related impacts, fire-related structural damage, impact damage, building movement, and other structural loss events.
The role combines advanced technical judgment, site investigation, causation analysis, expert reporting, file management, client communication, and mentorship of junior technical staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct forensic engineering investigations related to structural and civil/structural property losses
- Assess damage to residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings
- Investigate reported damage involving fire, water, wind, snow, impact, vibration, settlement, construction deficiencies, and other structural loss events
- Evaluate foundations, framing systems, roof structures, floor systems, wall systems, slabs, retaining structures, building envelopes, and related structural components
- Perform site inspections, document existing conditions, collect evidence, and identify required follow-up investigation or testing
- Review drawings, photographs, repair estimates, contractor scopes, maintenance records, historical documents, and third-party reports
- Develop technical opinions regarding cause, extent of damage, repairability, structural implications, code considerations, and relationship to reported loss events
- Prepare clear, detailed, and defensible forensic engineering reports
- Provide litigation support and expert witness services when required
- Coordinate with specialty consultants, laboratories, contractors, adjusters, lawyers, and other stakeholders
- Provide technical direction to intermediate and junior staff during site assessments and report preparation
- Manage active forensic engineering files from assignment through closeout
- Maintain proactive communication with insurance adjusters, legal counsel, clients, and internal project teams
- Review and quality-control technical reports prior to issuance
- Support the development of internal technical standards, reporting templates, and investigation procedures
- Assist with client relationship management and business development within the structural forensic engineering market
- Support integrated assignments involving Icon’s Building Consulting and Environmental Consulting divisions where structural engineering expertise is required
Qualifications
Education & Licensing
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related civil/structural engineering discipline
- Licensed Professional Engineer, P.Eng., in Ontario
- Eligibility for licensure in other Canadian provinces is considered an asset
Experience
- Minimum 8 years of progressive structural or civil/structural engineering experience
- Minimum 5 years of forensic engineering, structural failure investigation, structural damage assessment, property loss assessment, insurance claim assessment, litigation support, or related experience
- Direct experience assessing building damage, structural systems, foundations, framing, building envelopes, or civil/structural property loss events
- Experience preparing technical reports that address causation, extent of damage, repairability, structural implications, code considerations, construction deficiencies, or expert opinions
- Experience with insurance claim files, litigation support, expert reports, or dispute-related structural assessments is strongly preferred
- Strong working knowledge of building construction, structural behaviour, foundations, framing systems, building materials, building envelopes, and applicable codes and standards
Areas of Assessment
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in structural forensic assessments involving one or more of the following:
- Structural damage assessments
- Building movement, settlement, or foundation-related investigations
- Structural failure or partial failure assessments
- Fire-related structural damage
- Water, wind, snow load, storm, or impact-related structural damage
- Building envelope-related structural concerns
- Construction deficiency investigations
- Framing, roof, floor, wall, slab, and foundation assessments
- Insurance claim or litigation-related structural assessments
Skills & Attributes
- Strong technical judgment and investigative reasoning
- Exceptional technical writing and report preparation ability
- Ability to develop clear, supportable, and defensible engineering opinions
- Strong understanding of construction practices, building systems, structural behaviour, and property loss assessment
- Ability to communicate effectively with adjusters, lawyers, contractors, property owners, and internal teams
- Professional judgment, independence, and high ethical standards
- Ability to manage multiple active assignments and competing deadlines
- Strong attention to detail and documentation practices
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and relevant structural analysis or engineering software
- Willingness to travel for site inspections and client assignments
