Position Description

The Family Centre is a hub of activity for patients and families at SickKids. The Family Centre Assistant plays an integral role in providing child and family-centered care by providing excellent customer service to all patients and families. This in-person role involves collaboration with the Children's Librarian, the Library Information and Technician, the Family Centre Coordinator, volunteers and student while supporting the Centre's manager in delivering and designing hospital-wide initiatives and programming and responding to general inquiries and wayfinding.

Here's What You'll Get to Do

Provide daily coverage for the children's library; assist families with searching and loaning of materials, cataloguing, book processing, cohost the daily televised Story Time TV show on SickKids closed-circuit television channel
Assist with special events, implementing and leading programming and activities as needed
Provide excellent customer service in assisting families in-person, by phone and email
Provide families with information about community organizations, parent support groups and other available services, (i.e. Bravery Beads) both inside and outside the hospital
Perform opening and closing procedures and office/administrative duties in maintaining the Family Centre
Provide guidance, support and supervision for volunteers and students at onboarding, orientation and on-going throughout their service
Perform School and literacy-based outreach activities (i.e. book carts) throughout the hospital
Participates in the ongoing planning and evaluation of programs, events and activities of the Family Centre and provides statistical updates for the Family Centre as requested.
Shelving, shelf reading, sanitizing toys and books, tidying the library and play area

Here's What You'll Need

Post Secondary degree or diploma
Two years' experience in health care or library setting
Clinical, library, retail or Resource Centre experience
Experience in creating and delivering programming for children, teens and adults
Experience working with volunteers in a supporting or supervisory role
Practical knowledge of computer software applications. (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Well-developed interpersonal skills with families and staff alike
Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills
Self-directed and accountable while experienced working a team environment
Ability to establish and meet competing priorities and problem-solve as needed
Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives
