The Director of Care is a senior member of the management team and is responsible for the administration of all aspects of the nursing department including providing optimum resident care, management of human resources and ensuring financial accountability within legislative and budgetary requirements.
Assists in managing other departments within the facility during the absence of the administrator; and refers to the attention of the Administrator any issues which are not able to be resolved or require collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
- Administer the nursing department, ensuring that all necessary standards of resident care are being met.
- Oversight of nursing staff documentation related to resident care
- Plan, implement and evaluate an infection control program in collaboration with the Infection Prevention & Control Lead.
- Work collaboratively with residents and families as required to ensure care needs for resident are individualized and are delivered in a safe, effective manner.
- Ensure that the compliance standards as set out by Ministry of Health, Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 & Reg 246/22 and any other related legislation are being met and sustained.
- Ensure that the College of Nurses Standards of Practice is applied consistently in all resident care and interactions.
- Responsible for the oversight of the control and safekeeping of drugs and narcotics and destruction of same in the home, in collaboration with homes pharmacy provider
- Coordinate nursing services with other departments to support integrated resident care.
- Ensure nursing care standards are consistently met and aligned with Ministry of Health expectations and applicable legislation, including the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and Ontario Regulation 246/22
- Ensure the maintenance and proper usage of nursing supplies and equipment.
- Recommend the purchase of equipment and supplies as required/desired for the nursing department.
- Maintain oversight of inventory control.
- Order regular nursing supplies within prescribed financial guidelines.
- Establish and maintain liaison with the Medical Director and other health care professional people providing services to the facility.
- Participates in Community Committees.
- Promote efficient and professional nursing practices and procedures
- Interview and hire staff to adequately provide for nursing care of the residents.
- Monitor effectiveness of nursing staff and maintain a system of staff evaluation. Counsel, discipline and/or terminate staff as deemed appropriate
- Ensure that scheduling of staff is completed according to policy and union guidelines in collaboration with scheduling clerk.
- Conduct regular department meetings
- Ensure representation of staff on all required Program Committees and takes the lead in ensuring systems and processes are in place, adhered to and sustained.
- Ensures annual evaluation of all Programs are completed, summarized and appropriate action plan(s) developed to correct any identified gaps or to improve on the delivery of service.
- Ensures the completion of all Critical Incident Reports to the Ministry of Health within specified timelines. Reviews and analysis all Critical incidents to identify trends and to determine appropriate interventions to minimize critical incidents and prevention strategies.
- Have knowledge of High Intensity Needs and to ensure submission of claims to the Ministry within appropriate time frames.
- Monitor that Health and Safety Guidelines are being maintained as appropriate in collaboration with other department leads and health and safety committee.
- Participate in decision making at the senior management level.
- Makes suggestions/recommendations for policy and procedural changes to the Administrator and/or adjusts policies as required to ensure compliance standards are met.
- Ensure Nursing manuals are reviewed annually or as required.
- Ensure staff have access to nursing policy and procedures and provide oversight for compliance for implementation
- Manage an effective continuous Quality Improvement/Risk Management program for all aspects of resident care, documentation and nursing department issues. Complete and
- submit reports as required.
- Carry out other assignments as delegated by the Administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) registration in good standing with no restrictions.
- Post-RN education in gerontology (certificate preferred).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) is preferred.
- Current certification in Standard First Aid and/or Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR).
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a long-term care setting.
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or administrative expereince preferred.

Education & Training
- Ongoing education and training in all required Programs as outlined in FLTCA, 2021, and Reg 246/22.
