Full job description

Position Summary:
The Lead Charge Nurse (LCN) is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and resident-focused care within our small, local retirement residence. This role oversees clinical and administrative processes including medication management, care planning, audits, staff supervision, and scheduling, while ensuring the care team remains well-trained, supported, and motivated.

Working closely with the Director of Care, the LCN plays an active leadership role on the floor while also supporting operational and quality initiatives. The successful candidate must be flexible and available for rotating shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and occasional nights as operationally required; however, the primary schedule will consist of full-time day shifts. The position follows a 12-hour shift rotation, working 7 shifts within a two-week period.

Key Responsibilities:1. Clinical Care Administration & Quality

Oversee and facilitate the safe administration of medications and treatments during your shifts.
Maintain and update resident care plans, assessments, progress notes, and clinical documentation in accordance with professional standards and legislative requirements.
Monitor residents’ health status and respond appropriately to changes in condition.
Coordinate physician visits, pharmacy communication, laboratory follow-up, and specialist appointments as required.
Conduct and review regular clinical audits including medication administration, infection prevention and control, falls tracking, restraint monitoring, and documentation compliance.
Participate in move-ins, assessments, discharges, and resident/family care conferences.
Support quality improvement initiatives and ensure follow-through on identified action items.
Respond to resident, family, and team member concerns in a professional and timely manner.

2. Staff Supervision & Scheduling

Oversee daily staffing assignments and scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage and continuity of care.
Support recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, orientation, and retention of wellness staff including RPNs and PSWs.
Provide leadership, supervision, mentorship, and performance coaching to team members.
Complete performance evaluations, monitor attendance, and support progressive discipline when required.
Ensure policies, procedures, and clinical systems are consistently followed through spot audits and department reviews.
Promote a positive, respectful, and collaborative workplace culture.

3. Training, Development & Team Engagement

Coordinate and track mandatory education and ongoing training requirements.
Provide hands-on clinical support, coaching, and leadership on the floor.
Foster staff engagement, accountability, and professional growth.
Lead by example in delivering compassionate, resident-centered care.
Encourage teamwork, communication, and continuous improvement within the wellness department.

4. Compliance, Safety & Risk Management

Ensure compliance with the Retirement Homes Act, RHRA standards, CNO standards of practice, and internal policies and procedures.
Support ministry inspections, licensing requirements, audits, and corrective action plans.
Promote infection prevention and control measures and workplace health and safety practices.
Participate in emergency preparedness planning and response.
Maintain confidentiality and protect resident privacy in accordance with applicable legislation.

Qualifications:

Current registration as an RN or RPN in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
Minimum 2 years of leadership or charge nurse experience in retirement living, long-term care, or a similar healthcare environment.
Strong knowledge of resident assessment, medication administration, care planning, and applicable legislation.
Demonstrated experience in staff scheduling, supervision, and performance management.
Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
Ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative team environment.
Proficient in electronic health records, documentation systems, and standard office software.
CPR/First Aid certification required.

Work Schedule:

Full-time position
12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Rotating schedule of 7 shifts within a 14-day period
Primarily floor-based leadership role with one dedicated administrative day per week
Flexibility required for occasional evenings, weekends, and night coverage as needed
