The Kanata Food Cupboard is seeking a dynamic, creative, and community-minded Communications and Volunteer Coordinator to help advance our mission of reducing hunger and strengthening food security in our community.
This position combines two core areas of responsibility:
1. Marketing & Communications — creating compelling content, elevating our public presence, and driving engagement through storytelling and strategic communication.
2. Volunteer Management — recruiting, training, supporting, and coordinating the volunteers who make our programs possible.
This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, is organized and is interested in developing skills in non-profit communications and volunteer coordination.
About the Role
This is a part-time position (30 hours per week), approximately divided as:
- 10 hours per week focused on communications
- 20 hours per week focused on volunteer coordination and support
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for events or volunteer activities.
Key Responsibilities
Marketing and Communications (10 hrs/week)
You will support how the Kanata Food Cupboard shares its impact and connects with the community. Responsibilities include:
· Creating engaging content for social media, newsletters, and email updates
· Updating the website to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and relevance
· Assisting with the design of digital and print materials using tools such as Canva
· Scheduling and managing social media posts and engagement
· Collecting and sharing stories that highlight volunteers, programs, and community impact
· Supporting promotion of events and awareness campaigns
· Assisting with basic tracking of communications performance and engagement
· Supporting event promotion and managing event related communications before, during and after activities.
· Promoting seasonal, fundraising and awareness campaigns

Volunteer Management (20 hrs/week)
You will play an important role in ensuring volunteers are supported, organized, and engaged by:
- Leading volunteer recruitment and outreach activities and partnerships
- Managing screening processes, including interviews, reference checks, and onboarding for new volunteers.
- Scheduling volunteers for programs, events and operations.
- Developing and delivering volunteer training materials and orientation sessions.
· Working with program and operations staff to identify volunteer needs.
- Coordinating volunteer schedules to ensure adequate support for programs, events, and organizational activities.
- Responding to scheduling challenges such as cancellations, absences, and last‑minute needs.
- Serving as the primary contact for volunteer inquiries, support, and conflict resolution.
- Planning and facilitating individual and group volunteer experiences (including corporate, school, youth, and community groups).
- Maintaining accurate volunteer records and scheduling information,
- Leading volunteer recognition, retention, and engagement initiatives to foster a positive and inclusive volunteer culture.
Required Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, public relations, social sciences, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience using social media tools, preferable for a non-profit organization.
- Experience using Canva, WordPress, or email marketing tools (e.g., Constant Contact)
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team environment
- Positive, community-oriented attitude and willingness to learn
- Interest in food security, social services, or community development
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy, service-focused environment
- Valid G driver’s license and consent for an Auto Report Authorization.
- Ability to lift up to 45 lbs occasionally
- Successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check
Recommended Qualifications (Assets)
The following experience is considered an asset but is not required:
- Previous volunteer, nonprofit, or community service experience
- Experience working with volunteers or in team-based environments
- Working proficiency in French or another language is an asset
