Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations (Parks), the Forestry Technician is responsible for providing technical and field support to the Operational Services Division, Forestry Section, including:
Provides technical support through tender preparation and contract administration, including the gathering and analysis of information required for procurement and project delivery;
Conducts project inspections and facilitates effective communication and coordination with Town staff, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, and operational requirements;
Assists with operational policy, procedure, and by-law research, review, interpretation, and the development and implementation of best practices related to urban forestry operations;
Assists with report writing and technical documentation, including but not limited to grant applications, grant reporting, Council reports, and supporting management reports;
Assists with budget preparation, forecasting, and financial analysis, including the creation and maintenance of Excel spreadsheets, budget justifications, expenditure tracking, and benchmarking of industry costs, services, and product values;
Develops educational programs and provides clear, accurate information to the public and Town staff regarding the management, preservation, and protection of the Town’s urban forest, including responding to public inquiries, complaints, and concerns through the Town’s service request system;
Reviews and interprets landscape, engineering, development, and urban design plans, applying critical thinking and technical expertise to support design modifications, operational recommendations, tree preservation objectives, and urban forest management initiatives;
Assists with the design, development, maintenance, and analysis of GIS-related dashboards, ArcGIS maps, and associated datasets, providing clear and concise analytical reviews to support data-driven decision-making, operational efficiencies, and urban forestry recommendations and
Performs other related duties as assigned.

You are knowledgeable about and work in compliance with all workplace safety regulations, standards, and practices. You perform work in a safe manner and encourage and support others to do the same.
As the successful applicant, you will possess:
a minimum of a two (2) year diploma in Urban Forestry, Forestry Technologies, Natural Resources, or related discipline, from a recognized post-secondary institution;
a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience in a technical role for the support of urban forestry, arboricultural consulting, forestry operations, contract administration, urban forest planning, or a related municipal operation;
Current Certification in Standard First Aid & CPR ‘C’ and AED;
Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing and qualify for the Town’s Safe Driver Program criteria;
an ISA Certification – Arborist Designation from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) in good standing;
an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) in good standing;
a Tree & Plant Appraisal Qualification (TPAQ) from either the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) or a comparable training authority, and in good standing (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of employment);
an Ontario Pesticide Land Exterminators Licence with the Landscape Classification, in good standing;
the ability to clearly interpret various Town bylaws, including application of bylaw language;
a strong understanding of urban forestry industry best practices, forestry related maintenance and tree replacement programs;
strong tree identification skills, relevant to native trees of Southern Ontario and familiar with various introduced, hybridized, invasive and ornamental trees generally associated with urban landscapes;
the proven ability to develop efficient and effectiveness systems and procedures related to forestry;
an advanced working level knowledge of various ERSI based programs, including the design and development of field maps and dashboards, the maintenance of various information databases such as tree inventories, and able to export and analyze data;
an advanced working level knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Work, Excel, PowerPoint), and ability to create organized, clear and aesthetically pleasing reports, spreadsheets and presentations;
knowledgeable in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for data analysis and decision support and
a working level knowledge of workorder management software (e.g. City Works, 311 etc.)

This position may work flex hours, including days, afternoons, and nights, forty (40) hours per week. Between December-March shifts may be scheduled between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m., Sunday to Saturday. Between the months of April-November shifts may be scheduled between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Sunday to Saturday.
