Position Overview
St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon (SJA BCY) is seeking knowledgeable and engaging Faculty Instructors to deliver standardized first aid and CPR training programs. This role requires strong instructional ability, professionalism, and a commitment to maintaining high training standards and learner engagement. Faculty Instructors operate within a matrixed reporting structure, reporting to the Branch Manager for operational matters and to the Director of Training, Compliance & People for training, instructional standards, and compliance-related matters.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery:
- Deliver standardized first aid and CPR courses in alignment with St. John Ambulance curriculum and instructional standards
- Adapt instructional methods to meet diverse learner needs and experience levels
- Demonstrate proper first aid techniques and supervise learner practice activities
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment
Learner Assessment & Support:
- Evaluate learner performance through written, verbal, and practical assessments
- Provide clear, constructive feedback to support skill development
- Ensure all certification requirements are met prior to issuing completion status
- Support learners who require additional coaching or remediation
Professionalism & Representation:
- Represent St. John Ambulance in a professional manner at all times
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with learners, clients, and community partners
- Uphold organizational policies, procedures, and instructional standards
- Arrive prepared and punctual for all scheduled training sessions
Equipment & Classroom Management:
- Prepare, organize, and transport training materials and equipment as required
- Set up and dismantle classroom or training environments efficiently
- Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and inventory checks of training equipment
- Clean and sanitize all training equipment (including mannequins, AED trainers, and props) after each use in accordance with hygiene and safety standards
- Report damaged or missing equipment promptly
Administrative Duties:
- Complete required course documentation, attendance records, and evaluation forms accurately and on time
- Submit course reports and paperwork in accordance with organizational timelines
- Ensure compliance with certification and audit requirements
- Maintain current instructor certification and required professional development
Health, Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all occupational health and safety procedures during training delivery
- Ensure safe handling and use of all training equipment
- Maintain compliance with St. John Ambulance policies, provincial regulations, and training standards
- Identify and report any safety concerns or incidents immediately
Qualifications and Skills
Education & Professional Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in education, health sciences, or a related field is preferred (or an equivalent combination of education and instructional experience).
· Current First Aid Instructor certification (St. John Ambulance or recognized equivalent)
- Experience facilitating adult learning in classroom, practical, or blended learning environments.
- Familiarity with instructional standards, learner assessment, and maintaining accurate training records.
Instructional & Leadership Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to instruct, mentor, and support learners in a professional and engaging learning environment.
- Strong time management and classroom management skills with the ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet diverse learner needs.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback, encourage learner participation, and promote student success.
- Comfortable collaborating with fellow instructors and staff to support program delivery and continuous improvement.
Interpersonal & Communication Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and stakeholders.
- Clear, confident, and supportive communication style, both verbal and written.
- Ability to present information effectively and respond professionally to questions or concerns.
· Comfortable delivering training to diverse audiences and group sizes.
- Passion for teaching and helping others build confidence and competence in first aid skills.
Operational & Personal Competencies:
- High level of professionalism and reliability, with consistent punctuality, accountability, and appropriate conduct in all workplace and instructional settings.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, and ensure thorough preparation for training delivery.
- Excellent time management skills, able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain efficiency in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to manage administrative responsibilities effectively, including maintaining documentation, completing required reports, tracking attendance or training records, and ensuring compliance with organizational procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to follow directions, instructional standards, and organizational expectations consistently and professionally.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to company policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Flexible, dependable, and adaptable in a fast-paced training environment.
- Professional and approachable, with the ability to foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
