Position Information

Position Title

Accessibility Technology Strategist

Position Summary

The Accessibility Technology Strategist (ATS) is part of Student supports at Red Deer Polytechnic. Student Supports work to cultivate mental health and wellbeing within the RDP learning community through counselling, capacity building, stigma-reduction, accessibility and inclusion services, skill building, promotion, and education.

The ATS is responsible for increasing the success and retention of RDP students through assessment, training, and support services in assistive technology and software, and alternate format texts for students registered with Accessibility Services. The ATS also instructs the students on effective usage of the recommended technology and software. In ensuring the needs of these students are met, the ATS works closely with Accessibility Coordinators to help level the playing field for students with accessibility needs. The ATS stays current with trends in assistive technology and makes recommendations to the Accessibility team about technology.

Position Responsibilities

Assistive Technology Assessments:

Meet with new and returning students to determine assistive technology needs.
Review recommendations within verification information and other one on one assessment to determine assistive technology needs.
Recommend appropriate assistive technology that meets their specific needs.
Build relationships with students to facilitate ongoing assistive technology consultation and support.
Maintain thorough case notes in the Accessibility Services database following FOIP guidelines and other legal requirements.
Support students in obtaining technology and equipment needed by following guidelines and procedures for borrowing RDP equipment including collaboration with the Library staff in the signing out of equipment.
Support students in Schedule 4 documentation by adhering to provincial grant eligibility criteria, collaborating on the completion of funding documents, reviewing, and reconciling previous submissions.
Liaise with funding providers and Library staff to resolve and advocate for RDP students
Coordinate the ordering of, formatting, and distribution of Alternative Format Texts, modified curriculum materials, and course modules in accordance with copyright legislation.
Provide students with a written outline of the recommendations and information discussed.

Assistive Technology Training:

Facilitate a variety of training opportunities and demonstrations to staff, students and faculty regarding assistive technology and equipment using diverse delivery methods (e.g., online presentations, in person, video tutorials) and software not limited to Camtasia.
Support students in setting up their recommended equipment, demonstrating ways to integrate these tools into their learning process, and how it can support them with their specific learning barriers.
Facilitate ongoing assistive technology consultation, training, and support.
Respond to Accessibility Services support-related inquiries made in person, by phone, mail, or email by providing accurate information or direction.
Teach students how to use Access+ and book exams at Testing Services.
Contribute to the Accessibility Services Manual, Accessibility Services web presence, and the events calendar.

Research, Inventory, and Maintenance of Assistive Technology:

Responsible for all assistive technology equipment and software owned by Accessibility Services, including maintenance, troubleshooting, tracking usage, and waitlists.
Keep updated information on prices and quotes for equipment and services.
Initial troubleshooting and resolving basic hardware and software issues.
Research new technology and equipment as it pertains to student learning.
Research alternative ways for students to access assistive technology and equipment recommended (e.g. non-profit agencies).
Collaborate with Coordinators and Administrative Assistant on supporting updates, troubleshooting, and editing the Accessibility Services database.

Continuous Growth and Acquisition of New Skills:

Actively participates in relevant training and professional development activities as they become available.
Seeks learning opportunities from other colleagues to increase knowledge of Divisional services and can provide initial support and triage to students, faculty, and staff.
Actively acquires knowledge and regularly familiarizes self with policy and procedure in order to meet user needs immediately without misleading or misdirecting students to services.

Required Qualifications

Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of university in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

One to two years’ experience working with individuals who have or experience various learning barriers
Advanced computer skills, with proficiency in MS software, content management systems and virtual platforms
Experience working in a post-secondary environment is an asset
Knowledge of assistive technology, hardware, software and devices used by students in a post-secondary environment
Excellent problem-solving skills
Excellent administrative, time-management and organizational skills
Demonstrated student-centred approach to providing service
Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated dependability and flexibility to meet student needs
Proven team player with excellent collaboration skills

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
