Full job description

The Central Alberta FASD Network is a non-profit organization offering community-based and cost-free services to individuals impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), their caregivers and the community. We are part of a system-wide FASD Network model that has made Alberta a leader in service delivery, both in Canada and internationally. We offer education, prevention, assessment and diagnosis, and outreach and support services. We are seeking to fill a full-time, one-year contract Restorative Diversion & Community Outreach Worker position serving Red Deer and the surrounding area, with the possibility of renewing the term.

Job Summary:

The Restorative Diversion & Community Outreach Worker supports youth and adults, particularly those with suspected or diagnosed Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), by promoting diversion from the criminal justice system through restorative, community-based approaches. The role provides individualized case management, advocacy, and system navigation at all stages of justice involvement, from pre-charge through provincial and federal court processes. Working collaboratively with RCMP, Crown prosecutors, defense counsel, correctional institutions, community organizations, and government agencies, the incumbent builds strong partnerships to improve access to support and services. Through community outreach, the position fosters relationships with service providers, raises awareness of FASD and restorative justice, and provides education, guidance, and support to individuals, families, and caregivers to strengthen natural support networks and improve access to community resources. The role empowers clients to actively participate in setting and achieving personal goals that reflect their unique strengths, cultural values, and socioeconomic circumstances while promoting inclusive, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices that support long-term success.

Summary of Duties:

· Has knowledge and experience working within the criminal justice system.

· Demonstrates a high level of knowledge and professionalism and able to liaise with all levels of the criminal justice system.

· Demonstrates the ability to work successfully with incarcerated individuals.

· Provides support services that include ongoing assessment of individual and/or family/caregiver functioning, relational systems and environmental constraints and resources.

· Develops and implements supportive approaches and interventions that recognize clients’ unique characteristics and strengths as well as barriers.

· Supports positive, sustainable behavioral change as well as intrapersonal and interpersonal growth and development.

· Assists clients in navigating the FASD assessment and diagnosis process if applicable.

· Provides clients with FASD post-assessment and diagnosis follow-up support.

· Identifies barriers to service and addresses any concerns, such as client’s ability to provide a point of contact for themselves, scheduling assessments, transportation issues etc.

· Regularly connect with service providers, create and develop new partnerships, and maintain existing connections in the communities to provide ongoing FASD training, education, and prevention programming.

· Assist clients and additional supports in identifying and accessing appropriate community and government services.

· Assist clients with completion of necessary applications for services and other paperwork.

· Represents the Central Alberta Network at community events and through public awareness activities.

Education and Qualifications:

· Undergraduate degree or diploma in justice, social work, social science, or related field and/or comparable experience with FASD, disabilities, mental health, addictions.

· Minimum of 3 years work experience with vulnerable, marginalized or at-risk populations.

· Extensive knowledge regarding disabilities, mental health and addictions, and justice related.

· Commitment to a strength-based, client-centred approach.

· Superior communication ability and interpersonal skills.

· High level of personal integrity and ethical practice.

· High degree of Indigenous cultural awareness, and cultural awareness in general.

· Knowledge of community development processes and ability to enhance community capacity.

· Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple priorities, and tight timelines.

· Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule.

· A vehicle and valid class 5 driver’s license.

The position is 35 hours/week, Monday – Friday; flexibility will be required and the capacity to work occasional evenings and weekends.
