Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a highly motivated, personable, organized Senior Vegetation Ecologist in either our Regina or Saskatoon office to perform program development and execution for a wide variety of projects within various development sectors such as oil and gas, mining, and transportation within the vegetation ecology and wetland disciplines. As a senior member of the team, you will apply your expertise to develop and effectively execute work plans and budgets, write and quality review plans, reports, and proposals, and support technical innovation and development of the team. You will work independently and/ or supervise field and project teams at a discipline level to move projects toward closure in the most cost-effective manner. In this role, the junior and intermediate staff will look to you for mentorship and leadership.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct wetland assessments, ecological land classification (ELC) surveys, and vegetation inventories with a focus species of conservation concern that include species at risk and weeds.
- Conduct biophysical field surveys in accordance with provincial species detection protocols (e.g., vascular plant).
- Environmental assessments for municipal, provincial, and federal regulators in multiple sectors, including oil and gas, mining, land development, transportation, renewable energy.
- Work on a variety of natural resource planning projects, including natural area inventories and biophysical assessments.
- Ensure Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures are adhered to and participate in QA/QC reviews of deliverables.
- Desktop mapping of wetlands and vegetation communities.
- Interact directly with internal and external clients and contribute to developing excellent relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders.
- Lead and direct field assessments as required.
- Train junior and intermediate staff in field and reporting requirements to meet project and regulatory requirements.
- Identify scope and budget for proposal submissions.
- Attend client meetings and participate in regulatory strategy development for projects.
- Participate in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work.
- Execute specific technical tasks or requirements for medium to large projects.
- Effectively support junior and intermediate staff as a mentor and leader.
- Work proactively to further the technical needs of the team.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Proficient in and consistently demonstrate and promote policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (if applicable).
- Advanced skills in technical writing.
- Ability to lead vascular plant surveys with over 10 years of experience with local flora in Saskatchewan and/or Manitoba.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment under deadlines.
- Skilled in communications and technical information exchange with clients, engineers and scientists, government regulators and agencies, and academia, as well as non-technical communication to the public.
- Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence.
- At least 10 years of experience successfully executing vegetation and wetland technical aspects of medium to complex projects.
- Familiarity with relevant provincial and federal regulations and guidelines.
- Proficient in MS Office, ArcGIS, and digital data collection applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123).
- Champion new ideas and initiatives; and create an environment that supports creativity and innovation.
- Build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships.
- Good driving record and valid Class 5 driver’s license required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Science - Biology, Ecology, Forestry, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience including fieldwork.
- Professional designation (P. Bio., R.P.F., P.Ag.) is an asset.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time, as well as working in the field. Fieldwork may include remote work, long drives, 1-2 week shifts away from home, exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
